Chapter Song - Demons / Imagine Dragons
Avery's POV
I plopped myself down in my usual seat at the lunch table between Delilah and Josh.
"Hey Avery." Josh greeted me without looking up from his food.
This was typical of Josh, Josh Dun to be exact. You could consider him a punk if you wanted to, considering his obsession with the drums and other weird things. He was a bit of a jokester, but you could always count on him to be there for you.
"Josh don't be rude!" Delilah lectured him jokingly, scrunching her tiny, freckled nose."
Delilah Johnson was a goody-goody. She was an honors student who had never missed a homework assignment in her life. Some people thought she was stuck up, and I did too, but once you get to know her she's a really sweet person.
I laughed at the two of them and looked across the table at Myah Porter.
Of course she was working on some type of art project, occasionally taking a sip of her knock-off Starbucks passion tea she made at home along with a bite of her sandwich.
"What?" She asked after noticing me watching her.
Myah was the definition of hipster. She was always doing things that were different. She stood out from everyone else with her brown and blonde ombre hair. Not too mention her huge thick rimmed glasses that she only wore as a fashion statement and didn't really need.
"Nothing," I answered, "I was just looking at your drawing."
"Aren't you going to eat anything?"
I whipped my head to the right and find Gage sitting diagonally across from me.
Gage Blake was cute, sorta. He had blonde hair and bright blue eyes that always sparkled with curiosity. We dated a year or two ago, but decided that being friends was the best.
Everyone looked over at me, even Myah and Josh.
I felt heat rise to my face, but I forced it away and explained, " I don't believe in eating the school's shitty food."
"Lie. " I thought to myself.
Everyone seemed to accept that answer and went back to what they are doing.
I end up fiddling with my Hollister sweatshirt sleeves, making sure my arms are hidden.
You see, I'm not what people think I am. Yeah sure, I smile and laugh like I'm some happy-go-lucky teenaged girl, but deep down I hold a lot of secrets.
The reason I wasn't eating, anorexia.
The reason I wanted to keep my arms hidden, I cut them.
The reason I smile all the time, so people don't worry about me and discover my depression, or at least I think I have depression.
My mom and dad, god bless their souls, are never really home. They usually go on one or two month long business trips across the state in California, come back for a week, and then do it all over again. They love me, really, and they get me all of the stuff I want and let me do pretty much whatever I want, but they aren't around enough to see what I do to myself. So since they have no idea, they never got me tested.
"Hey Ave, look who's over there!" Delilah squealed.
I look up to see the love of my life, Tyler Robert Joseph, walking into the cafeteria with his friends. Well actually he has no idea who I am and he's the most popular kid in school.
I blushed furiously and looked away.
"OMG, just go talk to him already." Delilah sighed, "You're next door neighbors, that has to mean something."
I shake my head and smile weakly at my red Chuck Taylor's.
Josh nudged me, "Y'know he's pretty popular, think about all of the royalties you would get if you dated him: the ability to skip the lunch line, first pick at seats, the ability to go too any party you want to, and even giving zero fucks about everyone else."
I know he's joking, considering that his voice is pretty much dripping with sarcasm, but Gage is clueless.
"That would be nice." Gage admitted.
I shook my head, "Gage we already are popular."
It's not a lie. A lot of people looked up to my friends and me. The way a bunch polar opposites became besties and made a name for ourselves must be inspiring or something.
"Yeah, but not that kind of popular." Myah added.
That wasn't a lie either. We would never be invited to a different party every night or be praised by everyone in the school and even teachers. And I already mentioned this, those kids have no idea we even exist.
"It doesn't matter, Tyler and I will never happen. " I said flatly as I looked longingly at him.
Delilah raised an eyebrow and Josh began to smirk.
Suddenly I realized what he was about to do.
"Joshua Dun, don't you dare do what I think your about to do or I will kill you in your goddamned sleep." I hissed.
"HEY TYLER, MY FRIEND WANTS TO TALK TO YOU!" Josh shouted across the cafeteria, pointing at me.
The entire lunchroom went quiet and I wanted the world to swallow me whole.
Tyler looked over with an eyebrow raised. When he looked at everyone else, they immediately went back to whatever conversation they were having before.
I laid my head down on the table in embarrassment.
"Look like you're going to kill me in my goddamned sleep." Josh said laughing.
"No way!" Delilah gasped.
I lifted my head up, "What?"
"He's coming over here!"
I looked over to see the tall and lanky, Tyler Joseph, walking towards me.
"Shit. "
