“but better to get hurt by the truth than comforted with a lie.” » khaled hosseini

"Harry," I muttered; my heart beat invigorating from the sudden encounter.

"You know him?" Meg inquired. I nodded in response, before soaking up his appearance. His eyes were a dull, deep shade of laurel green, eye sockets drooped down into small grey bags beneath his eyes.

"We're looking for the others, care to help?" I asked, shrugging off his displeasing appearance.

"Don't bother," his voice cracked a nasally sound to it. Meg glared at him, before approaching him. She whispered a few things I couldn't quite hear, although the glances they gave me indicated it was about me. He nodded in response before turning back to me.

"Let's go find shelter; it's a bit chilly tonight."

"Oh yes! I think I saw something. It’s not a five-star hotel, although it's good enough. We can rest up and then find the rest. Right, Harry?"

"Yeah," he muttered in return. She led the way, silence consuming us. I kicked the scattered bits of cement in deep throat, my sides hurting every time I lifted my leg.

"Lean on me," Meg offered, wrapping an arm around my frail shoulders. I smiled at her sweet gesture.

"Thank you,"

"Oh hush. You deserve more, dear. There it is! The cave!" she screeched, and after walking for god knows how long, the news was heaven to my ears. We walked a few more minutes, reaching our final destination. Harry cleared his throat.

"Go gather firewood and stone. I'll look for something edible. Don't go too far," he gave me a lingering glare, and then marched to the unknown. I looked around, trying to find stones buried in the ashes. I managed to find a few branches and chunks of wood, although it wasn't enough. I kept walking, relieved by the remaining trees that were scattered across the earth. The glistening waters caught my eye, dancing lightly under the sky for as far as the eye can see. It was a reflection of the sky above. Beautiful with its array of color and the mysteries it holds. In the corner of my eye, I saw someone, lying on the smooth shore, his bare chest rising up and down slowly in a calming matter. The moonlight outlined his pointy nose, and made his green eyes look dull. He rose from his position, and started pacing around, kicking at the water that kissed the shore. He looked up at the sky in deep contemplation, in deep wonder.

He was talking.

I moved closer to make out the words he was saying, careful to not get caught.

"It's hard, Beth. God dammit! Why'd you go? You said so-- you said so yourself you weren't going anywhere! What happened to that? I miss you. I need you. I know you're up there. Please. Come back. You are oxygen and I'm just dying to breathe,"

I was in shock.

Pure shock.

The words hit me hard. I stood there, in pure and utter shock, and watched him hurt. That was when it struck me.

Everyone has hurt.

The mailman, my teachers, my parents, Meg, everyone.

This entire fantasy I've convinced myself that I'm the only one who's ever been weak-- that I'm the only one that was hurt to a point beyond compare; seemed to fade. In a span of 24 hours, I managed to watch a stranger I viewed as an emotionless bastard, to a vulnerable human. Like me. Like everyone. That's what makes up humanity.

Pain.

Words faltered from my mouth as I tried to speak. my unspoken words, 'he doesn't deserve this', would remain so as a solitary tear alone cried for me. My eyes, flickering as weak as a single star in the sky, unlaced the burden of emotions that I held so deeply. Soon a single tear was followed by another... and then another; forever dampening my cheeks with drops of sadness.

"Ocean? What are you doing here?"

"I, I uh, was looking for wood."

 "Near a lake?"

"I heard that wood is usually found near water because it grows, uh, easily, yeah."

"Who told you that? A drunken old man?"

"Hey, that man has a name. Grandpa."

The lame excuse for a joke made him chuckle. For a second, I was confused from the drastic change in emotion, although I blamed his thirst for happiness. For strength.

"I heard everything, you know." the words left my mouth without a thought and the look on his face made me regret it immediately. He tensed up before letting all the air hes been apparently holding in out. He sat on the sandy floor, and I sat beside him.

"It feels good, you know."

"What? Pain?" I remarked.

"No. It feels good to not worry about getting judged for weakness and cowardice. It feels good to let go. Let it all out."

"Can we try.. you know? Being friends and pretending we don't want to kill each other?"

"Sure. We should go back anyways, and you should go to sleep. Your eyes are red." he replied.

"And you should go to hell."

"Will do."

We walked to the cave that wasn't too far away, and to our surprise, we saw Meg sitting on the floor, a fire in front of her.

"Why didn't you wait for me?" I asked, frustrated that she would build a fire all alone.

"Well I wasn't going to sit and wait for you to do my work for me." she grinned.

"Touché," he raised his eyebrows, impressed.

"I'm hungry," I spoke out of nowhere.

"Oh right! I found some blueberries." he reached into his pockets and pulled out little balls of blue, setting them in front of us.

We didn't hesitate stuffing them all in our mouths, forgetting what sanitation was. It was a long day, and all we wanted was food.

We bid each other goodnight and gathered around the fire, exhaustion consuming us, leaving us in deep slumber.
