"How long?" Jade asks, her eyes moving from the check in her hands to Beck and then back again.

Beck looks so confused, and she wants to be angry with him for looking so damn stupid, but that would be irrational. He doesn't know that she's been working for her father because she thought that she was

sacrificing for him.

God, why don't they fucking talk to each other?

"I've been working for about two weeks. But why do you look so upset?"

Jade shakes her head. Two weeks?

How the hell had she not known that he had been working for two whole weeks?

The same way he doesn't know you're working for your dad, she hears a voice whisper in her ear, but she pointedly ignores it.

"I just...wish you would have told me sooner," Jade says with a sigh.

Beck smiles softly as he rubs the back of his neck. "I know. And I hated keeping it from you, I did, I just wanted it to be a surprise. I thought it was a good one, but judging by the look on your face-"

"No, this is-this is a great surprise," Jade says quickly. This is such a mess, she's made this such a mess, fuck her life. She takes a step toward him, her hand moving to his neck. "I just wish you would have told me you were getting job. And what about the play?"

"I'm still in the play. I just have a smaller part," Beck says with a shrug.

"You wanted the lead," Jade comments.

"And you wanted to be in the play and you're not," Beck reminds her. "I'm not going to let you be the only one who sacrifices for our daughter."

Jade swallows, his words overwhelming her with emotions that she's going to blame on the pregnancy like she always does, before leans forward and presses her lips against Beck's. "I love you," she tells him when she breaks the kiss.

Beck smiles at her. "I love you too," he replies, his hand moving to her cheek, his thumb moving over the apple of her cheek. "So, you're not mad that I kept this from you?" Beck asks, his hand motioning to the mechanic shop behind him.

Would you be mad that I kept the fact that I have been working for my dad from you?

Jade shake her head, pushing that traitorous thought to the back of her mind. "Of course not. I'm happy, I promise."

Beck grins, leaning forward to kiss her again, and Jade can't even enjoy the feeling of his lips on hers, because now she has to figure out how she's going to quit working with her dad.

"We need to talk," Jade says two days later as she walks into her father's office, shutting the door behind her.

Her father looks up from his computer, his brow furrowing. "What're are you doing here? And about what?" he asks before he groans and wants to know, "Are you still upset about lunch with George?"

Jade waves her hand dismissively. "Yes, but that's not what matters. What matter is I'm quitting."

Her father leans back into his chair. "You're doing what now?"

"Beck has a job. Which means that I no longer need your money. So, I'm quitting," Jade tells him, and it feels so good to do so.

Her father nods, standing slowly and buttoning his suit jacket. "Well, I'm glad that Beckett has final stepped up to his responsibilities."
