Gojo's steps echoed through the cavernous halls of the temple, his team moving silently behind him. The oppressive darkness seems to press in from all sides, and despite his best efforts, the unease clings to him like a shadow. The enemy's words gnawed at him, creating cracks in the ironclad resolve he'd always prided himself on.
The thought of losing Miyu is unbearable, but the fear that he is already losing her — losing himself — is even worse.
As they reached the heart of the temple, Gojo raised his hand, signaling his team to halt. The chamber before them is vast, its ceiling lost in the darkness above. Faint whispers echo through the space, the ghostly remnants of curses long forgotten. In the center of the chamber stand an ancient altar, its surface covered in arcane symbols that pulse with a faint, malevolent glow.
Gojo's eyes narrowed as he studies the altar. This is it — the source of the dark energy that has been permeating the temple. The enemy has led them here for a reason, and Gojo knows it isn't just to taunt him. There is something more, something the enemy is hiding, and Gojo intends to find out what it is.
"Stay alert," he murmurs to his team. They nods, their weapons at the ready, as they spread out to secure the area.
Gojo approaches the altar cautiously, his senses on high alert. The closer he gets, the stronger the dark energy becomes, calling around him like a serpent. His mind races, trying to piece together the enemy's plan, but every time he thought he has a grasp on it, the pieces seem to slip away.
The symbols on the altar pulse again, and a surge of dark energy erupts from the stone, sending a shockwave through the chamber. Gojo reacts instinctively, raising a barrier to protect himself and his team. The force of the blast pushes him back, but he holds firm, his barrier absorbing the brunt of the impact.
When the dust settles, Gojo lowers the barrier and steps forward, his eyes fixed on the altar. The symbols have stopped glowing, but the dark energy still lingers, thicker than before. It is as if the altar itself is alive, feeling of the malevolent power that surrounds it.
Gojo reached out, his hand hovering the surface of the altar, and then he hesitates. The enemy's voice echoes in his mind again, mocking, taunting, reminding him of the stakes.
Your precious Miyu... she's just the beginning.
He clenches his fist, trying to push the words away, but they lingers, festering in the back of his mind. What if the enemy is right? What if he couldn't protect her? What if —
No. He couldn't think like that. He wouldn't.
Taking a deep breath, Gojo steady himself and place his hand on the altar. The dark energy surged around him, but he pushed back, channelling his own power into the stone. For a moment, it seems as though the altar would resist, but then the symbols flared to life, and a hidden compartment slide open with a soft click.
Gojo steps back, his eyes narrowing as he peered into the compartment. Inside, nestled among the ancient runes and dark crystals, is a small, intricately carved box. He reaches for it, his fingers brushing the surface, and the box opens with a soft hiss, revealing its contents.
Inside is a single, glowing shard, pulsing with a dark, malevolent energy. Gojo's breath caught in his throat as he realize what it is — a fragment of an ancient curse, one that could only be activated by the most powerful sorcerers.
And it is meant for Miyu.
The enemy's plan clicks into place in Gojo's mind, the pieces finally fitting together. They have never been after him — not directly. They have been after Miyu all along, using Gojo as a pawn to lead him to her. And now, with this curse, they intend to destroy her — and by extension, destroy him.
