"She's so weird, isn't she?" asked Marcy as she slid into the chair across from mine, biting into her apple.
"Yeah," said Zach, "she's a fucking weirdo. She looks at people like they're pieces of shit."
"She ran out of Classics class today. She looked at Darley like he was some sort of monster..."
I shrugged, "Darley's always been a wacko. Maybe he raped her or something?" Marcy gave me a long, hard look.
"You've been watching NCIS and Criminal Minds too much," she announced, taking another bite out of her apple.
"No, I haven't," I protested. I mean, c'mon. They were great shows. How was I supposed to not watch them?
"What you see on those shows," Zach said, "isn't real. It's absolutely fake. It's a freaking story, not some real shit."
"Yeah, ok..." I muttered, embarrassed, biting into my sandwich.
"I wonder..." began Marcy.
"You wonder what?" I asked.
"I wonder what's going on. I've gone to school with her since kindergarten. She was quiet... but okay. Not like now, at least. What happened?"
"People change, Marcy," said Zach. That was the wisest thing he's ever said.
"If there's anything I've learned," I said, "is that something has to sharpen the knife. There's no puppet without a puppeteer. Something made her outcast herself."
"Crazy Cassie," Zach suddenly snorted.
"What?" Marcy asked.
"Crazy Cassie," Zach reiterated. "We should call her Crazy Cassie."
And he's back to normal, I thought.
But Crazy Cassie has a nice ring to it.
