The day they took her away was a Tuesday.
Everyone stood by and watched.
Crazy Cassie struggled against the handlers. She writhed like a snake, and managed to get free, and as if trying to tether herself to the earth, she dug her fingers into the autumn mud, desperation rising like bile in the back of her throat.
It was a pathetic scene really- she was hunched over on the ground like some sort of animal. The handlers simply reached down and pulled her again into their van, ignoring the scrabbling and keening noise that she emitted.
Everyone stood by and watched on that Tuesday.
Only for a moment, however.
Then their daily lives resumed.
