JACK was relieved the second he pulled his car up to the curb and saw Mark standing there, beside the playground slide, looking tired but thankfully sill in one piece. He was holding a duffel bag, and for a moment Jack wondered just where he planned on staying, but the thought left his mind. He had different priorities now. They'd talk about that another time.

He unlocked the doors and Mark ran up to the vehicle, glancing around subtly before getting in. "Thank you for coming," he said the moment he closed his door and did up his seatbelt, but Jack stayed silent because he was still slightly upset with Mark. The Irishman just gave him a curt nod and pulled away from the curb, heading down the road in the direction of his house.

There was a tense silence until Mark spoke up again, because god knows Jack wasn't about to. "I'm sorry for, um, that incident at school." Incident. Jack mouthed the words as if he was tasting them; his red haired friend continued, "I wasn't thinking. Honestly. I'd never say something like that-"

"Excuse me?" Jack interrupted, probably rudely but he didn't care. There was a slight edge to this voice. "I don't know if you ever noticed, but saying things like that to me around your friends seems to be a hobby of yours."

There was another moment of silence. "I know," said Mark, sounding guilty and uncomfortable. "I'm sorry. There's a part of me that has to be like that with you, maybe out if bad habit and I don't really know why. But it won't happen again."

"Yeah, okay," Jack muttered under his breath, rolling his eyes as quickly as the car's wheels rolled as they turned into his street.

"No, really, Jack. I promise it won't happen again." There was a long stretch without words. The car pulled into Jack's driveway, and he carefully turned off the ignition, pulling out the keys. They sat there in silence for a moment until the brown haired boy turned and looked his 'friend' (because were they just friends at this point?) in the eye. Mark, obviously trying to look confident, held his gaze. This made Jack crack something between a sigh and a smile.

"Okay," Jack said, rolling his eyes as he opened his door and stepped out. Mark did the same and Jack locked the vehicle. "Okay, you'd better not screw yourself over. This is your last chance." They began to walk to the front door.

"My last chance of what? Winning your love and affection?" Mark's voice came almost directly in Jack's ear, too close behind him. It made the Irishman flinch and annoyedly walk faster, cheeks heating up a bit.

" 'cause it seems to me I already have your love and affection," Mark said with a smirk evident in his voice but Jack ignored him, only shaking his head gently with a flushed expression, rather unlocking the front door and stepping inside, holding it open for Mark as he followed. "Where's your mom?"

"Working."

"So she doesn't know about it?" He sounded genuinely concerned, which made Jack frown.

"She doesn't care, Mark. If I wanted to fuck another boy, the only thing she'd tell me is to use a condom." Jack slid off his shoes and his coat, hanging the latter on the rack. Mark took off his sneakers.

"So that means you have condoms?" Again, he was suddenly too close to Jack, making the Irishman blush ferociously.

"Okay," he said, pushing Mark away embarrassedly, "Rule one while you're staying here is no sex. Got it?"
