Amelie and Joe's friendship was the kind that everybody wished they could have.
They both hung out almost everyday doing absolutely everything they could do.
They went to the park, went on hikes in the nearby forrest, went to the newest movies (became the town rotten tomatoes critics), had picnics, took stupid photos of each other, and lots of other things. They had the picture perfect friendship.

But, like all friendships, there have been some "ups and downs".
You see, Amelie was born Patrick. Joe grew up with "Patrick" almost his whole life.
Amelie knew she was trapped in the wrong body for most of her life. She knew who she really was, but she didn't know if Joe would accept her.

Amelie kept her little secret from Joe for a while.
It wasn't long after that Amelie decided to let Joe in.

flashback 1 year ago

"Joe...? Can I talk to you?" Amelie asked Joe while they were on their way to the park one day.

"Yeah, sure Patrick! You can tell me anything. You know that," Joe replied with a slightly worried expression on his face, "Is there something wrong?"

"Oh, nothing bad I suppose," Amelie trailed off on her words, "It's just... you're supportive of the whole LGBTQ+ stuff, right?"

"Yeah, you know I am. Patrick, you realize that I'm bisexual, right?" Joe said.

"I know, I know. I just needed, um, conformation I guess," Amelie said.

"Well, what did you want to say?" Joe asked.

They reached the park at this point. They sat down at a bench while getting out their bread to feed to the birds. (they were basically old people)

"Um... oh my God. Uh, I didn't think it would be this hard. Oh God, I don't really know how to say this but, I'm a trans girl?" Amelie rushed out.

"I'm sorry, what?" Joe said, letting go of the bread in his hands.
The birds swarmed around their feet.

"I'm transgender, Joe," Amelie restated, "Please don't make me say it again."

"So.. You're saying that you think you're a girl?"

"Not 'think'. I am a girl"

"Oh"

It took Joe a while to process all of it at once. Wouldn't you be at least the slightest bit surprised to learn that your best friend, whom you've known as the opposite gender almost all your life, come out as trans?
If you say no, you're lying.

After a couple of seconds go by, Joe abruptly stands up. The birds at their feet scatter. Some linger behind as if they wanted to see what would happen.

"Patrick- I mean, uh, whatever you want to be called, y'know that if you're trans-"
"I am trans"
"Yes, right, that I'll always be there for you? I support you 100%. You being a girl won't affect our friendship at all. In all honesty, when you said you wanted to talk, I thought you were gonna come out and say that you have cancer or something. But, you being who you really are will not affect the way I think about you," Joe said to Amelie, smiling.

Amelie had tears in her eyes once Joe finished his little "speech". She got up and hugged Joe like she'd never see him again.

"Thank you," she whispered while tears escaped from her eyes.

"Hey, you're my best friend, y'know? The least I can do is support you," Joe said.

"The name is Amelie," Amelie said, barely above a whisper.
"Nice to meet you, Amelie, I'm Joe"

"Amelie! Amelie, over here!" Joe called out from across the parking lot.
"I'm coming!" Amelie yelled out as she saw Joe by the car.

"Have you got everything?" Joe asked as Amelie approached the vehicle.
"You betcha," Amelie said.
"Well, get in you fucking loser"
"Shut up, gaywad," Amelie chuckled.

Joe started the car and drove them to the "surprise".

"So where are we going?" Amelie asked.
"Neverland," Joe replied jokingly, "Naw, we're going to this really cool spot in the forrest with this waterfall. It's pretty lit from what I've heard. I thought we could check it out," Joe said.
"Please don't say 'lit' ever again oh my God, Joe" Amelie giggled, "But, that does sound pretty neat-o."
"Damn right it does"

When they got there, they set up camp and went searching for the oh-so magnificent waterfall.

"Oh my God it's beautiful," Amelie said after 15 minutes of walking aimlessly around.

"Eh, it's cool I guess," Joe said.

Amelie smacked his arm harmlessly and led him over to the edge.

"I'm glad you took me here. It's so nice out," Amelie said while she viewed the waters in awe.

"That's what best friends are for, right, Amelie?"

"Right"

They took some pictures, and they let their feet soak in the waters until they went back to camp.

Some friendships have ups and downs. Amelie and Joe's did. But, they worked through them. As should all friends. It was good. It was more than good, really. They had each other, and they loved each other a lot.

They plan to be 'best friends til the end' as most say.
Best friends til' the end indeed.
