"Although a soldier by profession, I have never felt any sort of fondness for war, and I have never advocated it, except as a means of peace." -Ulysses S. Grant

The smell of pasta wafted up from the kitchen into my room when I was trying to find the perfect outfit for tonight. I was super excited because Jamie was coming! Okay, maybe I had a little, super, tiny crush on him, but he was definitely more my best friend.

I finally settled on a floral dress with a denim jacket and black flats. While brushing out my extremely blond hair then putting it into a french braid. I was born with white blond hair and crystal blue eyes yet people think I bleached it and have contacts. I shake my head; if people think I lie, who cares. My Yorkshire Terrier, Almond, came into the bathroom and looked at me curiously.

"What?" I said, my teeth clenching on the black rubber band in my mouth. "I just want to look good for once! Don't act like I never do this." He whined so I put him onto the bathroom counter and started brushing his fur with his dog brush.

"You must be excited as well I guess, cause his dog Felice is coming too huh? Big boy dogs need to look handsome for girls right?" I cooed, then looked around and saw my dad's black pin on tie. I found some ribbon, pinned the tie on and wrapped it around Almond's neck.

"There. Now you definitely look dashing. You're sure to catch her eye."

Suddenly the doorbell rang. "Oh, I guess they're here." I said, kind of nervously to Almond. "Wait! I'm coming! I've got the door!"

I tripped on a towel that had been left on the floor. "Ugh." I mumbled, blowing a piece of hair that had fallen out of the braid and onto my face. I got up and darted down the stairs and to the front door.

I quickly looked in the mirror next to the door. "Shoot bubble." I tucked the one strand of hair back into the braid and patted down my dress before opening up the door.

"Hey!" He said peeking up from his phone. "I was beginning to wonder if you'd ever open the door." He smiled and winked.

"Haha. You're five minutes early. Don't be surprised that I wasn't ready."

"Well, you're ready now. And you look so beauti-err..." He paused, then coughed awkwardly. "Can I come in? I think Felice is about to freeze her paws off." He smiled, changing the subject, and led himself in with Felice following at his heels

I closed the door behind them, still curious about what he was going to say.

He had already let Felice off her leash and began taking off his coat and hanging it up on in our small closet.

I was staring at him. I didn't try to but he was so handsome with his messy-but-not-too-messy brown hair.. He was wearing a nice white dress shirt that brought out his beautiful grey eyes, and the new black khakis I had gotten him. I really should stop checking him out. In my defense, any girl with a good taste in guys would.

"Hey, Happy Birthday." He said pulling me into a huge bear hug.

"Aghhh you already said that!" I muttered, once again being dragged into his bone-crushing squeeze.

"Yeah, I know, but I can't help it! Dang, that food smells so good."

"Oh right! Come in and sit at the dining table. My dad is way too excited because the 'big football game' is happening tonight and he wants to watch it with his favorite teen, which apparently isn't me." I fake pouted.

"Chiefs against the Raiders? Booyah! Cannot wait!" He threw his fist up into the air then walked through the hallway into the kitchen where my mom was just taking the dish out of the oven. Almond and Felice wagged their tails and sniffed in greeting.
