His Faith

"Jeb! Come spar with me!" I spoke loudly, throwing my bag down. I needed to hit something. Hard.

For the past hour, I had kept trying to talk myself out of the most ridiculous idea ever but my dumb heart was too stubborn enough to agree with my mind.

I tied my long blonde hair into a high ponytail and took off my sweater, leaving me in a tank top. I put my legs into its usual stance. My blue eyes narrowed as I looked at the man who clearly did not want to be a part of this.

"Now! Come here."

He sighed and slowly walked over. We eyed each other for a few seconds and Jeb went for the first move. Dummy. I punched him in the cheek. He staggered for a second, making his body go into a weak point where I could easily target. Swooping my leg under his, he fell to the ground, groaning.

"No, I'm done!" Jeb slowly came up from the ground and winced each step. "This is why I stick to cooking." He muttered.

My body was kicking up adrenaline and I needed more. Thankfully, it was evening and we had hit a small forest. Going by myself, I started to punch a tree with softer wood. I was mad at myself.

As I was about to go for another swing at the innocent tree, a hand pulled my elbow, turning me around and I punched the incoming stranger.

"Woah, slow down princess. It's just me." Phaz said. He put his hands on my shoulders and let out a sigh. "What are you so angry at?"

You. Me. "Nothing. I just want to let out some stress. Walking all day can get boring."

"Your knuckles are all bloody because you were hitting that poor tree. Let me help you bandage it."

"No!" I snapped away from him and his eyes went wide. Great. He didn't do anything wrong.... except being hot. That was wrong. "Just, please, leave me alone."

"Princ--I mean Ocean, we have to cooperate with each other. I have to lead you to safety."

Something in me snapped. "Just because of your work? Because it's your duty?"

"Ye--no. Yes?"

"Wow, he actually doesn't have an answer!" Awesome, now I was being sassy too.

"Ocean, I know what this is about. It's becoming of me not being with you right? I still haven't had a chance of explaining my faith. Do you want to know??"

I stomped my foot on the ground. "Yes! I've tried to ask you but you never get to explain! Jesus? God? What is it?!"

"You're a sinner."

"Oh, gee thanks."

"No, I mean, I am too. We are all sinners. Sin came into the world. We're all supposed to go to hell. It's a sad but true statement. We're basically filthy rags."

I scoffed. "That isn't very nice."

"But it's true. However, God loves His creation. He made us. He made you in His likeness. And he made you..," Phaz paused, brushing a stray strand of hair that had fallen in my face, "So very beautiful. He wanted us to have another way to have eternal life. So He sent His only Son to die on the cross for our sins; to put the burden of all our sins on Him. However, He rose again."

My mind was in shambles. "His only Son...?"

He nodded his head. "Yeah. He took away a debt. We owed a debt that we couldn't pay. As long as we believe that His Son died on the cross for our sins and that He rose again and we ask Him to forgive us, that's all there is to have eternal life. But we should still worship Him and love Him forever. It's just... amazing. He'll be coming back for us and we'll get to see Heaven and be with Him for eternity."

"That's a lot..." I breathed.

"I know. I have a Bible if you want. You can borrow it. This world and its sins will fade away but He won't. He gave us a choice; to believe in Him or not. He's a fair King. You can start by reading Romans 3:23."

Eliaphaz stood up and stretched out his hand to me. I took it and he pulled me up. We awkwardly stood there for a while, not saying a word. After a couple of minutes, I opened my mouth to say something when, BOOM.

In instinct, we crouched, ducking our heads to the ground, covering our heads with our arms. In a few minutes, we looked up again at the sky than at each other. What the heck was that?! We ran back to the camp, hoping that Jeb was alright and still his crazy self. I put a hand to my heart when we saw him hiding in the tent, peeking out.

I ran towards him, hugging his big body. "Thank goodness you are all right!"

"What happened?!" Phaz exclaimed, looking around the tiny camp.

"I don't know man! I was busy stoking the fire with a stick when I heard an explosion just like you!" He said, coming out.

We both looked at the soldier, unsure of what to do or say. Do we stay here? Do we keep moving? I was afraid but I was definitely ready to take on any enemies we had coming to us.

Phaz took off his cap and ran a hand through brown hair. Now that I had come to think of it, I had never seen him take off his cap. Though he had a buzz cut, it was now growing again into thick strands. Oh, how I wish I could run my fingers through his silky--wait, now is not the time Ocean! I could understand what he was going through. We had just gotten to this place and yet we were surrounded by the north and south of, most likely, enemy camp. If we went east or west, we'd be going in the wrong direction. After all, our destination was Wisconsin.

"Oh, screw it. We keep going on."

Jeb and I gasped, our eyes wide. "Right into the fire?" I asked.

"After these many days I've been with you, I trust that you've gotten your skills under your belt. Ocean, you're good at opposing while Jeb can at least protect himself. If worse comes to worst..." Eli dug into his bag and pulled out two pistols, a bigger one for Jeb and a smaller one for me. His gray eyes were serious as he looked at us. I gulped, taking the deathly weapon.

Eliaphaz looked on ahead at the vast grassy field, narrowing his eyes. "Let's do this thing."
