Just Plain Stupid

A hand started to shake me out of my beautiful dreams. Nooo, go away! MORE DESSERTS PLEASE.

"Get up, princess!! No sleep for refugees!" A deep voice said. Ugh great. It was him.

Sighing, I rolled over in the hammock then stepped out of it. My platinum hair probably looked like a glorious mess but it was okay. I still looked as hot as heck.

"When it turns noon, we'll be practicing some new stuff. Daggers."

Now, this woke me up. "I get to use weapons?!" I asked eagerly to the soldier, grabbing my backpack.

"Yes, but under strict restrictions!" He firmly said. I smirked, realizing we were actually getting somewhere.

After walking for a few miles, the sun was overhead and I jumped up and down. "Okay, Phaz! I'm ready!"

"Dear Lord.." He muttered under his breath. "What about lunch?"

Shrugging, I replied, "We can get ourselves hungry enough to eat." Looking at me with an exhausted expression, he sighed, plopping his backpack down.

Eliaphaz scoured through the bag then pulled out two daggers, one big and small. He handed me the tiny one and I rolled my eyes. "Seriously? Why can't I have the large one??"

"It's safer. Also, with your size, it's better."

"Are you calling me a midget?!"

He lifted up both of his hands in defense. "You said it, not me."

Grumbling, I snatched the dagger from him. "It's called petite. I want to let you know though that I won't kill."

"And you don't have to. Jeb or I will be by your side, I just want you to know how to defend yourself and stick out until one of us can get to you." Phaz said. He takes his gun out and my eyes grow wide.

"You can't shoot me! Also, we're supposed to be on the down-low, any shot can spark attention!" I frantically whisper.

He rolled his gray orbs. "I'm just trying to imitate an attacker. I would never hurt you." His voice went quieter, "Ever."

A blush crept onto my cheeks. Why did that feel as if there was something more to that? Inwardly shaking it off, my body went into a fighting stance.

"Man may have a gun but you are quick on your feet. Run to get behind my back. I'll be shooting. It may graze your side as you run but better than completely in your side or in your chest. Go!"

Running as fast as I could, the soldier made imaginary shooting sounds, making a smile grace my lips. He turned around but was still a second slow.

My foot kicked the crook of his leg making him buckle to the ground. Instantly, my knife went to his neck and I smirked. "How's that for a princess?" I whispered in his ear. I felt a bit of happiness swell up when his ears turned red.

"You definitely beat the stereotype." Eliaphaz groaned as he got up. "Let's do it again."

After an hour of training, I collapsed on the long grass. "Ugh, why does exercise have to hurt?"

Jeb laughed and handed me a water bottle. "You're a savage girl, baby. Keep it up."

"You sure got that right." I winked, taking many gulps.

I felt proud. I was now able to defend myself and maybe others too. There was no more weak Ocean. I leaned back on my elbows and looked at the endless blue sky. 'Stand strong like a wave. Don't let anyone bring you down." My eyes then wandered to Phaz who was yelling at Jeb for spilling some of the beans on the ground. 'Find a man who loves you...' A man who loves me? And when would that actually happen?

•••••••

"So, how much longer till we get there?" Jeb asked, breaking a stick into pieces as we walked along.

Phaz groaned. "Please, don't be like that annoying child that asks that every five minutes."

He rolled his eyes. "I'm just asking once!"

"We've had to change our route multiple times. We have at least five days till we reach our destination."

I stopped in my tracks and looked at Eliaphaz. "Only five days?"

Jeb turned to look at me weirdly. "Isn't that great? You'll be able to have a real bed, maybe even permanently. What's wrong?"

The soldier didn't turn to look at me, he just kept his eyes on the ground. Five days left. Only five days before Eliaphaz would leave to either pick up a new set of refugees or be transported miles away and I could never see his face again.

We started to walk again and my heart felt like breaking. We had only kissed once. I liked him so much. Love perhaps? If another person was here, they'd think I was foolish for loving a man so soon. We had only been together for around a week and a half.

I was stupid. Stupid for him.
