Emma’s POV
The rain starts coming down faster than it was the previous minutes. I put my hood up, pulling on the strings. My phone vibrates in my pocket and I shield it, making sure not to get a lot of water on it.
“Hello?”
“Em, are you at home?” Riley asks through the speaker. Thunder cracks above me.
“No, I was running. I’m about two blocks away from your house.” I say.
“Well go over to there. It’s supposed to start storming harder, and you can’t get back in time.” I obey Riley’s command and after hanging up, sprint down the sidewalk. The only sound was thunder cracking in the sky, and my sneakers splashing in the puddles of rain. It was dark other than the occasional strike of lightning. When I get the McDonough’s I knock furiously on the door, my body shaking from the cold.
The door opens to Toby, who I was not expecting.
“Hey, come in.” He says without hesitation. I step inside and wrap my arms around my body. “What are you doing out?” Toby asks, taking a step forward. I turn my head away from him.
“I was out running and it started to storm. Riley called me and told me to come here. Is he here?” I ask.
“Oh um,” Toby shifts on his feet, biting his bottom lip, “no actually. My parents went away for a couple’s weekend and my brothers are at Braiden’s house.”
My heart sinks.
“Oh well, I’ll call Riley and see when they’re coming back.” Toby nods and walks back into the living room. I hurriedly take my phone from my pocket and dial Riley’s number. It was number two on speed dial.
“What the hell?” I say through clenched teeth. They had finally stopped chattering from the cold outside. “Couldn’t have given me a warning?”
“I’m sorry, but I know you wouldn’t have gone over there if I told you the truth and you needed to get off the roads.” I sigh, and rub my forehead.
“Yeah, you’re right I wouldn’t have. When will you be back?” I hear Riley take a deep breath, like he didn’t want to say these next words.
“I won’t. Not tonight at least.”
“What?!” I exclaim. My face is hot and my fists curled. “Why not?”
“No cars are allowed on the road. Trees have been falling and it’s not safe.”
“Fine, I’ll just walk home then.”
“No! I’m not letting you walk home in this storm. Em, I know this sucks but I’d rather you be safe.”
“Fine. Be back as soon as you can.”
“I will. I love you, Emmy Bear.” He jokes. I roll my eyes, but can’t help the grin that appears on my face.
