Emma's POV
The make up was burning my face as I take wipes to my face. I told Lacie I was going to break out with so much make up on, and now Chelsea was going to have to take more time to cover it up. It was a vicious cycle.
I was currently at the McDonough's, and Riley was the only other person home that I knew of. The others went to some after party I didn't have the energy for, and never came back, although it was 11 a.m.
Whenever I pictured my prom, I pictured myself going with Ethan. Instead I ended up going with Riley, and kissing him. I was quite confused until he explained it to me.
"You've always told me you wanted a grand, romantic gesture at your prom. Since you're stuck with me, I thought I would at least deliver." He said. We talked everything over. He knew I still, unfortunatly, had lingering feelings for Toby, and he understood. I was just his best friend.
After I have successfully removed the make up from my face, I walk out of the bathroom and into Riley's room.
"I'm so tired." I complain, sprawling myself half on Riley's bed, and half on Riley.
"Then go to sleep." He says, chuckling.
"But I've already slept so much!"
"I'll go get us something to eat." Riley carefully removes my legs from his lap, and walks out into the hallway. Realizing I had forgotten my phone in the bathroom, I drag myself off of the bed. Before I can make it out into the hallway, I bump into a tall figure.
"Oh, sorry." I say to Toby. His eyes don't meet mine as he walks away. "Wait." I grab his arm and pulls him back.
"What?" He snaps.
"Whoa, what's wrong?" I ask. "I thought we were good?"
"Yeah, and I thought you and my brother would never betray me." His voice is full of venom. "I saw you two kiss."
"Oh."
"Yeah, oh." Toby's fists were curled. "Do you know how much that hurt me? Especially after you tell me you love me?"
"What?" Now I am angry and heat rises to my face. "I never said I loved you."
"Yes, you did. The night of Riley's party. You know it sucks getting hurt by the one person you care about more than anything."
"Are you kidding me right now? What about when I come home after two weeks and find you sucking face with that bitch? What about when you actually tried to hurt me with Jo? Huh? What about then? Don't fucking talk to me about being hurt?" Tears were falling on the apples of my cheeks now.
"Em-" Toby reaches for my shaking hands, but I pull them back. At this moment, I couldn't look at him. My eyes keep directed at the ground, my vision blurry, as I run down the stairs.
"Emma!" Riley yells as I blow past him. It feels like the day all of this started, the day I came back and saw Toby kissing Jo. This time I don't go home. I run and run, not having a destination. I hated myself. I hated Jo. I hated Toby.
*~*~*
Toby's POV
It's been four days now. No one has heard anything from Emma, not even Riley. She's been completely MIA. I didn't know what to do, no one did. I did know that everyone had the same fear; the fear she was lying dead somewhere while we wait here. Emma left her phone at our house, so there was no way to attempt to get a hold of her.
I've been lying in bed for these two days, trying to keep myself together. I didn't want anyone to see me like this.
Jo was over yesterday. She tried talking to me but, of course, I didn't feel like talking. She didn't know what was going on, only that Emma hasn't been around.
From my desk, a phone starts ringing. I know it's not Emma's because Riley had taken it from me. I drag myself from my bed, and to my desk. My eyes turn down in confusion. It's Jo's phone, but that's not what confuses me. The name that pops up on the screen is Daddy.
I hesitantly slide the lock to answer the call.
"Hello?"
"Who is this?" The voice on the other end asks.
"This is Toby, Jo's. . . boyfriend."
"Oh, Toby! I haven't seen you in forever! Since right after I was diagnosed."
"Mr. Adams?" I ask.
"The one and only." I was at a loss of words. Jo had lied. Unless I was talking to the dead, Jo's father hadn't died.
"How are you feeling?" I ask.
"Amazing! Cancer free! So, the reason I was calling was to find my daughter. Do you know where she is?" He asks.
"I was actually just wondering the same thing." I respond. "How about I go over to your house and see if she's there. I'll tell her to call you."
"That would be wonderful! Thank you Toby."
"You're welcome."
