Toby's POV
Surprisingly, Riley meets me at Starbucks like I asked him to. He hasn't said much to me the past few days, but it's not like I expect him to. Yeah, he may have kissed Emma, but I am the one that was an asshole to her.
"What did you wanna talk about?" He asks from across the table. The big brother I used to know is gone now, replaced with someone I barley know. I bet he was thinking the same thing about me.
"I broke up with Jo." I whisper. "Her dad isn't dead." Riley's eyebrows turn down and he licks his lips.
"What do you mean? I thought he had cancer?"
"He did, but Jo lied about him dying. He's cancer free."
"How did you find out?" Part of Riley's caring side is coming out, but I know that I won't see the whole thing. I don't deserve to.
"Jo left her phone at the house and her dad called. I picked up and talked to him." I respond. Surprisingly, I wasn't that hurt about her lying to me. Unsurprisingly, Jo put up quite a fight when I broke up with her. I was angry at myself for believing her. I was angry at myself for hurting Emma. I just hated myself. The guilt increased as the hours Emma has been gone increases.
"Toby, I can honestly say I'm sorry for you. But you know how I feel about this whole Emma thing."
"I know. I don't think anyone understands how horrible I feel. Finally I can understand everything she felt while I hurt her, and I hate myself for it. I hate myself more than you will ever know." A tear escapes my eye and I quickly wipe away it's path. "I just really want her to come home so I can tell her."
Riley stays quiet for a few minutes, like something was brewing inside of him. After I say, "She told me she loved me," he speaks.
"Listen. I found her."
"What? Is she okay? Where is she?" The questions wouldn't stop. I just needed to see her; I needed to see if she was okay.
"She went back home. She went to see Justin. He called me earlier this morning."
"Is she coming home?"
Riley slowly nods and says, "Yes. They got on the earliest flight. Now listen. I'm going to help you. You two are obviously better together than apart, seeing how you both are self-destructing." I can't argue with that.
"What are we going to do?" I ask.
*~*~*
My leg won't stop bouncing. All of us are in my living room. Some know what they are doing here, other's don't. I get glares from Alex, but surprisingly not many from the girls. I know they are waiting to here the worst news. I know they always expect the worse with Emma, but I know the truth. I know she's going to walk in the door and be okay. We'll both be okay.
I try not to picture the smiling girl from a few months ago. The girl who wore most of her make-up to cover up her scars, but hated wearing it on her face. The shy girl I saw singing on the stage the first time I saw her. The happy girl who kissed me for the first time in a paddle boat. I knew if I pictured Emma like that, I would be setting myself up for disappointment. Instead, I don't try and picture her at all. I don't want to picture the girl from four days ago either.
I hear jiggling of the handle to the front door. I hold my breath as it opens and Riley walks in, followed by Justin. Than I see her. My angel, my princess, my whole world. I wanted to cry. After imaging her dead somewhere for four days, seeing her with a few wraps on her arms and band aids on her legs was a relief.
Alex jumps up and picks Emma up carefully, like he was going to break her. The girls were crying as they hug her next. Connor, Braiden, Thomas, and the rest of the boys also take their turn. I hang back, knowing I will have her soon enough.
She was crying, but there was a small smile on her face as she hugged everyone. Eyelids covered her sparkling eyes, and all I wanted was to captivate her eyes with mine.
I take the opportunity to approach Justin as everyone else settles on the couch. Riley gives me a slight nod as I walk past him. For some reason, even that small gesture gives me hope everything will be okay.
I nod my head in the direction of the kitchen, and Justin follows.
"I'm guessing Emma told you everything." I say.
"Actually," he beings, "she told me less than you'd expect. It was quite a surprise to see her on my doorstep, especially because of her appearance." I visibly wince at his words.
"I can imagine."
"Well, I'm guessing something happened between you two."
"That obvious?"
"Oh yeah. So will you tell me what happened?" And so I did. I started from when Emma went to Colorado until Today.
"So basically, " he said after I was finished, "you are an asshole?"
"Exactly. You have permission to punch me in the face, or wherever you prefer."
"I'm not going to punch you. I'm not an asshole." I can't help but laugh. "So what are you going to do?"
"I'm going to fix it."
"How?" He asks.
"Anyway I can."
