My favourite case

I listen to the hymns. My mouth is too dry to sing and I'm worried I will cry again. Everyone's faces are pale and grave in contrast to their black attire. Such fancy wear for a lifeless body. I'm being a hypocrite of course, my own black lace dress shows this. 'Always dress smartly' I've been raised to believe. It's imprinted in my head.

Everyone sits. Slowly, people give tributes to the lifeless body in the coffin. I'm expected too but it would be impossible. Few words make it out my pale, cracked lips. The words that are being tearfully said are painful, so I zone out.

Dad had given me cases to distract me. Ones he's already solved as I'm not allowed out but it's good to have a puzzle. I always liked puzzles. There were many cases, some simple like the boy in feathered hat or the 200 and one boxes all empty except one which carried a noose. Some were almost impossible like the "treehugger" I believe John called it. But I have my favourites, the murderer played it out beautifully. Of course that's because it was for me based on one of my favourite childhood stories.

It all started with a neatly placed note:

I thought it was a case from Dad but it wasn't. There was nothing on it for weeks.

Until I was staring out my window, sad and lonely. I was wrapped in a blanket massaging sweet smelling moisturiser into my hands ,when I saw a women. She was pale with dark purple hair. Her face painted with bright colours and her clothes black, she was smoking a cigarette.

However what got my attention was a tattoo on her left arm - a white rabbit...
