Lucas paced around the hall, waiting for class to be over.

Waiting for Art Class to be over.

He watched her through the window, she sat there, so perfect, talking to another boy.

He didn't understand why she'd said it. He loved her, she loved him, and when they got a chance together--

Bang.

She wants to be independent.

He wanted to say that he respected her wishes, but that would be a lie. He didn't give a crap about her wishes. He just wanted her to be with him.

Come on Maya! It took him long enough to notice his feelings (or admit them) and now you're running away.

He always ran away.

And now he stopped, and she ran away too fast.

He couldn't seem to chase her.

He remembered at the ski lodge, when she broke his heart.

He was going to tell her, choose her, kiss her. Everything had been planned out.

But then everyone kept pressuring him to go for Riley, and she looked so happy.

And when Maya told him to choose her, he assumed that she no longer liked him. And his heart dropped.

And his friends forced him to choose Riley.

The bell rang, and he walked into the classroom, not bothering to look at he people staring at him.

"Hey shortstack."

"Go away," Maya sighs, clearly annoyed with his attempts.

"But I can't," He whines.

"Learn to man up," Maya says. "Or leave me the bloody hell alone."

And with that, she stomps off.

Lucas debates whether or not he should follow her, but decides he'll just pester Zay instead, because Zay is fun to talk to, he gets mad.

"Zay!" He calls, walking straight to his locker.

"What?" He asks. "This is the third time we've done this today."

"I took your advice," He replies. "And she ignored me."

"I gave you that advice a month ago," He says. "Don't you think it won't work yet?"

"But if I can-"

"Lucas," Zay says, taking out his cookie, about to take a bite. "She's a stubborn blonde Maya. Face it, she won't give in."

I slam his locker shut, and stare at him.

All he does is laugh, and take a bite out of his cookie.

"What?" I whine.

"You look like you're going to cry," He teases.

"That's because I am," I sigh.

Zay looks at me funnily, and then sighs.

"Come here big baby."

Yes, you must be like: what the heck Lucas?! That is something the girls do, not you. You don't cry.

And you must also be like, MAYA YOU MADE MY HUCKLEBERRY CRY!

So, let's just say, Lucas just really loves Maya, and she's being a bitch.

Back to the story.

After Lucas cries, he pulls himself together, and straightens out.

"That never happened."

"And Riley never ate my cookie," Zay laughs.

---------

Lucas spent nights thinking about what to do.

Does he keep trying?

Or does he just give up?

He sat up, and checked his phone.

Nothing from Maya.

But something from Riley.

Ex-Princess 🙈🐵: Lucas! Why aren't you and Maya dating yet!

Ex-Gentlemen 🤵🏼🦆: because she is stubborn

Ex-Princess 🙈🐵: She loves you though! Just get her!

Ex-Gentlemen 🤵🏼🦆: what? You expect me just to kiss her?!

Ex-Princess 🙈🐵: uhhhhh! Ya!

Ex-Gentlemen 🤵🏼🦆: Goodnight Riley!

Ex-Princess 🙈🐵: don't let the bed bugs bite!!

He frowns, and sits his phone down.

Seriously, what was he supposed to do?

If he kissed her, she'd hate him. They wouldn't talk again. And his fight would be for nothing.

He refused to make her jealous, he'd be loyal to her. He wasn't going to just start dating random people.

And then a huge burden set on his chest.

In three months, high school would be over.

And they'd graduate grade 12.

And he most likely would never see Maya Hart again.

---------

Weeks past, Lucas just sat as a third wheel with Farkle and Riley.

And all he could do was watch his best friend get closer to her, and him farther.

She was so beautiful, so flawless, so funny.

And she wasn't his.

God, why hadn't he just followed his stupid heart in the beginning and chose her?!

But that, is a question that may never be answered.

----------

Maya sat in art class, knowing he was waiting for her outside. Like he did everyday.

And everyday, she had to get rid of him.

She did love him, but she just wasn't sure he loved her. He claimed to have loved Riley, and look how easy he dumped her.

She painted her feelings, which usually cane out as red and blue and sadness and anger.

But every painting got better.

She painted a sunset, and two people kissing under it.

Because they loved each other, and they had no problems with it.

But she knew, that's never be Lucas and her.

She finally had enough of it, so she pulled out her phone, and opened iMessage.

To: Huckleberry 😰💗: do you love me?

Little did she know, that was what he was doing at that very moment.

To: Shortstack 💕🤧😰: do you love me?

But their fingers just hovered over the send button.

And that message was never sent.
