"I can't believe we're doing this." Angi gave me a comforting smile as we stood in front of Simon's house, more accurately mansion. She looked beautiful as always but I refused to let Simon see me at my prime so I stuck to a natural makeup look and a modest dress. I looked good but it wasn't what I would usually wear to a party.
We headed to the front door and rang the doorbell. Simon opened it looking annoyingly sharp in a dress shirt with his hair gelled back, he scanned me up and down and scoffed, finding something amusing already.
"Welcome ladies! The alcohol is over there just stay away from my new white shirt." We followed him as he walked inside. He gestured to a bar and winking at me, I rolled my eyes. Angi elbowed me and faked a giggle.
"Great. Thanks." I muttered curtly and spotted a bottle of wine that I knew I would need at some point. We followed him further out to the living room where there was a large group of men and few women. The men looked at Angi and me immediately and frankly I was already over the testosterone. Simon introduced us to football player after player and I didn't remember names but he remained somewhat civil.
Angi and got time to ourselves finally when Simon talked to his teammates. "Were we too drunk to notice how hot he is?" Angi whispered and I chuckled.
"I guess so but we weren't drunk enough to figure out he's an ass." I sipped from the glass of red wine.
"Yeah you're right but surely not all of his hot friends are the same." Angi scanned the room and she was probably right but I was too emotionally drained from my last relationship so I couldn't find it in me to care. I encouraged her to talk to the first guy who said she looked stunning and who was clearly her type. Angi went to look for him as I stood by myself clinging to my glass of wine. Simon approached and I decided no amount of wine would be enough.
"Need more wine?" He noticed my glass was quickly emptying.
"I'm good actually thanks." Simon was being awfully civil which I didn't expect to last long.
"I see you clearly didn't give effort to look nice tonight." And there was the end of it. He stood beside me and leaned down to make this comment. I had predicted this kind of move but it still made me pissed off. He wasn't wrong but that didn't mean he could make a comment about it.
"I didn't think anyone here deserved it." I turned to him and looked him in the eye, faking a smile, which he returned.
"Hmm, you look good to me even if that's not your intention." He didn't break eye contact but I rolled my eyes and turned to face forward.
"Remind me to wear sweats and no makeup the next time I see you." I retorted back not letting his comment affect me. He was just trying to get under my skin as usual. Angi looked back at me as she spoke to the hot guy and gave me a look that meant to ask if I was okay or needed back up. I gave her look that meant I was fine which wasn't true but I didn't want Angi to leave her current situation as the guy was interested and Simon would only be a dick to her too.
"I have a feeling you're gonna be hard to crack."
"What makes you think you can crack me?" He opened his mouth to respond only to be cut off by his only competitor for my least favorite person in the world, Alex.
"Minter how are you doing mate?! Didn't know you and Ivy were friends now!" Everything he said made me want to roll my eyes and take several shots of strongm alcohol, even when we were dating he was insanely possessive and right now he looked jealous. Instead of Simon saying something sleazy and making the situation worse and therefore last longer I answered his hidden question.
"He's my client now, that's why I'm here." It didn't make sense but as dull and drunk as Alex was he wouldn't question it. Simon cocked his eyebrow at me and I elbowed him slightly, begging he played along.
"Yup you heard her, Alex. And I'm doing well how are you?" Simon said curtly, it seemed he wasn't a fan of Alex either.
"Oh you know good as always. Did you hear bout my last match?" Alex went on to talk about his last match and I needed an excuse to escape fast. I mumbled something about refilling my glass and Alex didn't notice but Simon shot me a look which I didn't understand.
I found the kitchen, guessing no one would be there, and sipped on my wine. I checked the time and it was already 11, I wondered when everyone would leave so Simon could tell me what I needed to know already. I decided to just scroll through Instagram or something to occupy myself, I really needed time to fast forward but social media was the next best thing.
"Hey you left me back there." A deep voice said and I looked up to see Simon. I did what I could to resist an eye roll, why couldn't he just leave me alone?
"With Alex? I thought you two were friends." I set my phone down. If I was going to talk to him it might as well be about something other than how good I looked.
"Bloody hell no I can't stand that guy. Is he your ex?" I was attentive then, how had he known had Alex said something to him because that would surely come back to me.
"Yeah how could you tell?" I crossed my arms then on the defensive and Simon leaned back against the counter across from me, shrugging.
"The way he looked at me and then you. Plus I know Alex enough to know he's a possessive little shit." I laughed then, it was one of those laughs that just escaped your mouth. Simon looked up in shock and grinned genuinely for the first time.
"That's for damn sure not to mention he's extremely conceded. When we dated he didn't even know my birthday because all he did was talk about himself." Simon laughed then and his laugh was actually adorable, which didn't fit his personality at all and I almost doubted it came from him. "Anyway enough about me, you have things to tell me." I gave him a pointed look and became serious. I needed to stay as professional as possible and I already fucked that up too many times tonight. Simon's posture changed back into his usual asshole one and I had flipped a switch I knew I would regret. The little normality we had in our relationship quickly faded and he began to talk.
