Greatma ate and stayed with us over night, but once morning came, she was gone. No one saw where she went, but that wasn't what I was thinking about, I was thinking about my dragon. Well, a dragon, mine was probably dead. The normal person would have been terrified about the first day of school, or the disappearing great grandparent, but not me. I was concerned about my dragon, if I had a dragon. The truth be told, I wasn't afraid of going to school, because I wasn't going to school, I figured that because we always walk to school anyway, it wasn't going to be hard to take a 'wrong turn' and start to look for my dragon.
I 'figured' wrong.
"Now, Lilo, so that you don't get any ideas," mum started as I started to eat my breakfast. "I am dropping you of at the gate. And that's final, so don't ask."
Look I know what your thinking, 'so this Lilo girl doesn't have a dragon, big deal, so what!' But here's the thing, our every day is based on your dragon. So when your a little child, say zero to two, your parents dragons are just as much your parents as they are your real parents, often the mother or fathers dragon would take care of the baby just as much as the parents them selves. Once you turn five you learn basic nursery rhymes: my little dragon, naughty Jhonnys, and dragon scales. All of which are based on dragons. By seven, all your toys are dragon themed and you have learned their sounds: the timberjack goes hiss, the earthquaker goes dacker dacker, the sandstorm starter goes arooooo. By nine, your at school, that's the age where you learn how to write so that when you get to high school you can work purely on dragons with no distractions, this is when your about thirteen. In your high school years, you learn about keeping a stable tidy, different requirements for different species, the diseases your dragon may get, what to do near a savage dragon, the different fire powers, the effect the habitat has on the dragon, how to train your dragon to do tricks just to name a few. Then you have a variety of sports, shooting, races, diving, capture the flag and many many ball games. After school years, your job is often based of you dragon, farming for instance with out dragons we would die of starvation, all the jobs are used as a dragon. But most of all, a dragon is there in your time of need, it is a loyal, protective best friend that is funny, kind, brave, encouraging, helpful, and never leaves you for anything. I know this because mum always said that once I get my dragon I will have a new family member and I would know what it is like to, to, to, feel so special that words can't describe. With out a dragon, my whole upbringing would be a waist of time, with out a dragon, school would be a waist of time, without a dragon I would be a waist of time.
I was not going to let that happen.
Mum rode me out to school, dads body gobbler ride, as usual was incredibly bumpy. As soon as we arrived, Erid filed through the gates excitedly, but I waited until mum was out of sight, so that I could start my hunt.
A few nosy kids eyed me out as I walked briskly away from the school but I didn't care. I walked confidently around a few corners until I came to a old rusty park where I knew it would be ok for me to change out of my school cloths into a outfit that I snuck into my bag instead of study books. As I struggled with a denim pair of shorts, my purple streak flopped out from behind my ear, usually I would have to hide it back instantly, and hope that no one saw, but as I lifted my hand to hide it, I realised that I didn't have to and that I didn't want to, and that today was going to be the day that I didn't have to do what everyone wanted me to do. I didn't have to be who everyone wanted me to be. I was independent, I was capable, and I was strong. I could decide my own future, wether they liked it or not.
Once I had slipped my way into a light blue singlet and my denim shorts, I swapped my leather boots for some comfy joggers and started on my way. Honestly, I had no idea where is was going but I had a vague idea. If I can find Mayler and her dragons, she would be able to give me some information. Then I can track down my own dragon. Mum had said that Mayler takes the dragons from one town to the next, so all I had to do was find the next town. That sounded easier in my head.
