Although Jale looked like one of the smiley and kind girls, but her expression didn't budge. Her mouth stayed straight and almost sad while her eyes remained hidden behind the thick glasses. I wanted to enjoy her company but every time she turned her head to face me, my entire body went cold and stiff almost as if my body was being controlled all over again. Behind her glasses was a faint glow, so faint that I didn't really notice it. Although, from what I could tell, the glow would be incredibly bright if she took her glasses off. It was a slight orange colour, one of those colours you would relate to alert, aware, and slightly fearful. The glow darkened and lightened every now and then but didn't go out.
We talked slightly while we walked although every time I brought up a conversation, she shut it down quickly as though she was worried I would learn to much.
"How long have you been in the woods?" I questioned.
"A while" she replied bluntly.
"Oh, well, do you like your dragon?" I asked, almost pleading for a less awkward chat.
"Yes."
"When did you find him?" I asked.
She turned her head to face me and I went so cold that I could hardly breath. Something told me that this was her intention.
After passing twisted roots and dark leaves, we came to a massive tree with branches growing nearly horizontally leaving a comfortable spot in the middle. It was easily the best tree for building a tree house except for the fact that a slim, wiry and large dragon lay plumply in its branches. The dragon was mainly black, except for fluorescent stripes flowing through it. It was so under fed that you could see it rib cages very clearly. The beast was about as long as your average teenager except was about a skinny as one too. The coloured stripes flowed slowly as if being pumped lazily through its blood stream and its tremendous snoring drowned out the rest of the forest.
I was in shock. It was scary. Seeing a death dragon for the first time was about as nerve racking as a big clown following you around. Except that this guy could kill you in half a second.
Jale gracefully circled the beast and softly patted the monster. The creature had enormous ears that Jale could have easily
fit her head in. She whispered gently into the ear and when she didn't get a response she started to stroke his head.
"Benabi, Benabi?" She whispered lightly. I noticed that orange glow behind her glasses was now a pale green.
The monster groaned. He didn't want to get up. If you asked me, I didn't want him to get up either.
"Benabi!" She said sternly her pale green glow changing to a red. As she started to shove the creature with all her might she seemed to of noticed me staring at her glasses eyes. "What?" She asked sternly with a grunt half way through as she pushed the dragon harder.
"I just... well, can I ask? About the..."
"About the glow." She finished with another large 'oomph'.
"Well, yeah." I said with slight embarrassment.
"For years death riders have been separated from there dragons, when I say for years I mean for over fifty. As you know, each human has a connection with its dragon so that the dragon can find it right?"
"Right.." I confirm wondering what any of this has to do with her.
"When the dragon can't find the owner after many many many years the connections start to -oomph- grow."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, our similarities have grown so much that now we can control what our dragon controls. We have, in a sense, powers."
"Wait, what!?"
"Your shadow trick, that wasn't the shadows, that was you!"
"Me? But, I... well,"
"We have them so our dragon can recognise us after being separated for so long. Yours is darkness, mine is hypnosis. My eyes are as bright as flash lights and change colour based on my mood. I controlled you for a while. Sometimes it's just hard to keep your heart pumping and get your legs to work. Lungs are easy to control but the heart and nerve system, that's something else!"
I said nothing. I didn't know what to say. I just watched Jale finally shove Benabi off the huge tree and sit on him.
"Care to go for a ride?" She asked her glow distinctly yellow.
"Well.... ok."
And with that I sat on her slim dragon and we leap into the air.
It can't describe how amazing it was. The icy air tangling your hair. The view stretching passed forests, mountains, villages and desserts. The thump of benabi's wings pounding through the air. The different smells of trees, bakeries, animals and the clouds. The surroundings were very moist and our clothes became very wet in a matter of minutes but I loved every second it.
