Dad, Erid, Marlo and Kilba all got board of waiting for the instructor to finish the line of fifteen year olds and went home. That left mum and I. We waited until the sun was just setting. Then finally the line closed up. Mayler took one quick look at us and sighed. "Looks like you guys want a dragon."
Honestly, at the time I was so angry that, that seemed like the rudest comment.
I snarled, "yes." I spat.
"Well, I won't hold you up." The instructor muttered as she lead us to the stables, "you guys can try the left over dragons again but I have got to go get the saddle ready, so good luck."
"What does she mean get the saddle ready?" I asked mum.
"Well you see all the dragons in this area were bred in the same place, when a human baby is born, so is a dragon. Then all the fifteen year old dragons go on what is usually called a road trip, they all get hooked up and stop at each town to chose there human."
"How do they know what human to chose?"
"Well, you should be learning about this in school this year, but I guess some early teachings couldn't hurt." She started, "each dragon has some kind of physical... similarity, with there human. For example, a rider with lots of energy would be likely to get a active dragon, maybe some one with red hair would get a fire themed dragon. These are just examples but the dragons know what to look for."
"What's setting up a saddle got anything to do with the dragons?" I asked as we walk into the stable.
"Well, we ride our dragons everywhere, as you would know, these dragons all get a leash and follow the instructors dragon."
I nodded as I glanced into an enclosure. The dragon looked at me and curled into a ball against the far wall. I reached my hand out to try and show it that he can trust me, but it's reaction changed, it gave out a shriek and huddled into a tighter ball burying its head in its shoulder. Is it...afraid of me?
With a flick of my hand I continued. Nothing had changed since the first time I checked the stables, the dragons all hated me. "This is hopeless," I complain.
"Now now, I'm sure you have a dragon."
Just because I had a dragon doesn't mean it's here.
"It could be dead for all I know!" I wailed.
"Oh no, sorry to say, but we don't breed death dragons." Mayler noted in her usual high voice.
"No, she didn't say death dragon, She said dead dragon." My mother noted firmly, she had never liked incorrect statements.
"Are you suggesting that there is such a thing, as a death dragon?" I questioned.
"Well,-" Mayler started, but to her disappointment was interrupted by my mother.
"There was such a thing but they are all extinct now, so don't get any ideas" she stated harshly.
"Well, actually-" the instructor started up again but mum gave her a dark look.
"Your dragon is not dead, and it is not a death, understand?" Mum asked.
I didn't respond. "Understand?" She asked again.
"Yes"
I didn't believe her but there was nothing I could do. I hated it.
"Well... how about we do this, dragons represent some sort of feature in the rider, if we can detect your feature, we can use that to figure out what dragon is yours, and where to find it." Mayler suggested.
I nodded. Mayler grumpily waddled To the far room in the big shed. The room looked considerably like a dentist room a few chairs sat faces each other. I sat down silently while mum stood behind me.
"Now I am going to ask you numerous questions and I want you to answer them honestly."
I nodd.
"First question: shine or shimmer?"
"Um... neither?" She gave me a dark look, which was not what I expected from such a bright person. "Shine." She furrows her eyebrows and nods.
"Light or dark?"
"Dark."
"Black or coloured?"
"Black."
"Winter or summer?"
I look at her confused. "Winter."
"Why?"
"Um... just because." She glances at her clip board and nods.
"Beach or forest."
"Forest."
"City or wildlife?"
"City."
"Fire or earth?"
"Both."
"Cabbage or fish?"
"Fish?"
She looked shaken. Mayer gave a quick glance of concern to my mum.
"So, what were the results?" I asked as if the answer was going to come.
Mums eyes widened as if she was warning Mayer not to tell me, Mayer ignored her.
"A death class, not sure which one though."
"But that's impossible, they are all extinct!" Mothers complained as if she was terrified.
Mayer looked to me as if to say it's your choice.
"Look, mum, is there a slight chance that there are still alive?" She pursed her lips and gave a quick short nod. "And you want me to just sit here and pretend that I don't have a dragon?"
"Honey, what are you going to do, there is nothing-" mum starts
"I am going to find my dragon!" I spat.
Mayler looked at me sympathetically "Lilo Kilery Amarlo, I know how much this means to you, but, the chances of them actually being alive is slim, and the chances of you coming back alive are even less. Don't do it."
"Fine." I spat...
I lied.
