Kendan
I move around the sleeping kids under the overhead cloth, causing me to crouch down some as I lay Kendan on his black cotton blanket, near the center of the nap time area. We decided that older kids would be on the outskirts of the sleeping area while the younger ones would stay near the center. Brushing his long blonde hair away from his face I kiss his forehead and leave the sleeping area.
We protect the young in our community, which explains why we have six guards always rotating around the area while they sleep with the pregnant women of the pack either cooking or calming down the ones who have nightmares or who are restless. During the day we have over 35 men and woman circling the outskirts of the camp guarding it with a variety of weapons, while during the night we had about 45. Everyone has to put equal work into every job we have here. We have over 150 people, not including kids. We are actually one of the smallest communities of humans out there that are still left alive.
I spent the next few hours helping prepare dinner, checking up on some of the injured that went on the hunt, and checking up on Kendan. After Kendan had woken up from his nap though I decided to take him for a walk, as I walked a few steps behind Kendan through the woods, about an hour from dinner, this was the first free time I've had all day so I decided to spend it with him, like I did whenever I could. Walking through the woods was one of the things we loved to do most.
I watched Kendan waddle through the woods, Alarick was right he did have a little wobble still in his step. We were picking out the flowers, or Kendan was, and I was holding them for him. He liked picking out dandelions from how many I was holding in comparison to the other flowers that he had handed to me.
Sitting down in a grassy area under a tree, I called out to Kendan "Ken, mommies sitting over here don't go too far." The only response I got back was gibberish and a giggle. Smiling I shake my head as I watch him pick a few flowers before coming back over to me setting them in my hand and wandering off again.
"I figured you'd be out here." Someone said in a low voice. Fighting to keep the smile off my face I looked up at Tivon with a bored expression on my face. "Damn are you serious? How long have you known that I was following you?" Pouting at me he sat beside me as Kendan squealed and tried running over to Tivon with new flowers in his hand but fell.
Grabbing Tivon's arm as he went to get up to help Kendan up I murmured, "Don't. Let him do it himself." He tossed me a curious look before watching as Kendan look up with watery eyes at us, and I just smiled. "You're okay babes. Get up Ken." After noticing that I didn't freak out like most other mothers did when their kids fell he just got right back up and ran over to Tivon, much more carefully this time, and gave him the flowers before toddling away again.
"You've been following us for at least five minutes after we left, you need to work on softening your footsteps." Grinning I look over at my best friend who was scowling knowing I was right. His messy wavy, long hair was all over the place. Presumably from running his fingers through it from being stressed and his typically light brown eyes seemed darker than they usually were.
