Licas came over to me as I was walking away from a single dad whose wife had died in childbirth and was struggling with his daughter who was being fussy. He had came over and asked to spend some time with Kendan.
I pursed my lips watching Licas walk away, for some reason I couldn't help but want to smile. Maybe it's because he actually wants to spend time with his son, or the fact that he came and asked permission. I don't know, but I did know that I did not like this feeling. Particularly for a wolf that just popped into my life. I pat Nick on his shoulder giving him and his daughter, who finally fell asleep, before moving on. Making my rounds making sure everyone is fine and okay after the chain of events that have happened.
Keeping my eyes on Kendan, I see his big blue eyes peer up at him quizzically staring at him. Probably wondering who he was and why he was coming up to him. I watched as he knelt down beside him watching his lips move, to be completely honest he looked terrified. Moving a few paces closer to Robert and his pregnant wife, I watch as Kendan pushed some of his rocks and twigs to him. Stopping dead in my tracks I look at the brightest smile light up on his face. I felt my heart start to ache as I watched them move the rocks and twigs around aimlessly, with him making sound effects and Kendan laughing hysterically.
Jumping once Kelsey, Roberts wife, touched me gently on the arm. Turning toward her I watched as she smiled and looked to him and Kendan. Speaking softly, like she usually does, "Kendan has that dimpled smile." Looking at the two of them I realize she is right.
"And his curls." I finally manage to croak out after a minute.
"Honey," I turn to Kelsey again looking at her worried face. "everything will be okay darlin' don't you worry about anything. You and that man will have a wonderful life one day. I know it's tough now," She looked to Robert when she said this, "but in the end, everything works itself out in the end. It's fate, Hun." Smiling she rubbed her large stomach.
I was going to her something, anything, but her face grimaced in pain, and she grounded her teeth. Feeling a flash of worry go through my body, like some kind of natural instinct, I push aside my feelings and thoughts focusing on Kelsey as Robert rushed to her side.
"It's nothing you guys, just been having little contractions is all," Kelsey said with her teeth clenched together.
Sighing I shook my head. "You should have told us when it started happening Kelsey." Turning toward Robert, "Take her to the medical tent, get her in bed, and track how far those contractions are apart." Wiping my hand across my face I pull on the roots of my hair, chewing my lip. The primary birthing doctor went with the people who are scouting out new areas. The other one we had was out of a run in a hunting group. We had their apprentices, but none of them were really experienced in what to do. They only are up to the part of checking up on the mothers while they are pregnant.
