Talesin and I met when our fathers took us to get judged by the old king. At the time, Ky'Rein was his adviser, he had no chance at the throne until the news reached the king that his son had been murdered by bandits.

Back then, they were building my team of knights. It was just an idea that they decided to put to the test and it ended up going better than they thought it would be.

We were in the throne room, waiting for the king to finish talking to our fathers. I sat on one side of the Great Hall, Tale sitting in the same seat directly across from me and the two of us finally noticed each other.

We started making faces at each other, trying not to laugh because it was considered disrespectful to the king. But we couldn't help it and a giggle erupted out of both of us. Quickly, we tried to remedy our mistake, slapping our hands over our mouths and looking away from each other.

But it was too late, our fathers turned and were about to tell us off when the king put up his hand. He asked for us to come closer and both of us did, bowing and squeezing our eyes together as we waited for his harshest words for a toddler.

We were both young but we were old enough to know what was right and wrong, especially in a royal court.

After all, my father was a knight and Tale's was a general in the army so we were around royalty a lot.

To the point were we got sick of seeing crowns.

But the king did the exact opposite of what anyone had ever thought that he would do.

He bent down, picking both of us up and sat us both on his throne, bending down to look at us like our fathers would have if we had done something wrong without really knowing that it was wrong. You could see that this was not something that he was supposed to do, something that was considered disrespectful but at this point, none of the people in the room dared to even think about going against him.

His words are still imprinted in my mind and I'm sure that Talesin remembers them clearly as well. It was the words that changed our lives forever.

"Astericka and Talesin," he was so kind, a soft smile on his face, "Do you know why you were taken here today?" Tale shook his head at that, looking at the king with his big emerald eyes sparkling with innocence in the sunlight. I nodded and my father quickly tried to make an excuse to why I knew why I was here until the king held his hand up before motioning for me to tell him.

"We're going to be knights," I squeaked out and Tale looked at me before looking at his father and the king. He was scared but he was being surprisingly brave, especially when it came to the fact that he knew that his father wanted him to follow in his footsteps.

"That's right, little Aster," the king replied, me giggling at the shorter version of my name, "But my council was meeting when your fathers brought you in. Do you know why they would do that?"

We shook our heads, my black hair still tied up in a ponytail tightly, the style that I had adapted from my mother a couple of years before.

The king nodded and asked, "Well, do you know why I would ask them to do that?"

Again, we shook our heads, Talesin looking at me nervously. I bit my lip with a bit of fear pumping through my veins but the king smiled.

"Because you," he pointed at me, "Are going to be the leader of your knights. And we needed someone to look over you. So Talesin."

Tale's head shot up and he looked at the king with fierce eyes.

"You're going to be the one responsible for keeping her safe," the king finished, "If she gets hurt, it will be your fault."

Talesin's father shot to the king's side and I can remember the words clearly in my head because that was the day when I found out that I hated Tale's family.

"But your highness, my son cannot be inferior to a woman and still look after her!"

My dad was angry at this and he asked what was wrong with that. The king took my father's side and while they were arguing, they were getting into a pretty heavy debate when Talesin poked me in the shoulder.

I looked over at him and he giggled, "You wanna go play?"

I nodded and he jumped off the throne, reaching up his hand to me with a small smile on his face. Nervously, I moved to the edge of the throne but swallowed when I saw how big a drop it was.

"Don't worry," Tale said calmly, "I'm supposed to take care of you, aren't I?"

A small smile landed on my face and I took his hand, jumping off the side of the throne and landing on my feet with a giggle. Tale smiled and, still holding my hand, took me into the courtyard to play in the sun.
