Chapter 22

Merlock (Mermaidlock) - Part one

John cheered as his team mate scored a goal. The crowd went wild as the whislte sounded. Their team had one their first match this season! This was fantastic news!

John grinned as him and his team posed for the camera.

"Say, GOAL!" Laughed the man behind the camera.

"GOAL!" They all cheered before bursting out into childish giggles. Patting each other on the back, the left the pitch and went to the changing rooms.

"Nice shot Carl!" John waved in the direction of his team mate who smiled back.

"Thanks!" Carl chuckled. He was a shy lad but he found football to be something he loved.

John smiled the entire way home. It was unusual for his team to win a match so early in the season. To be honest, the team was pretty crap. Half the team almost never showed for practice and when they did, they were practicaly asleep.

As he got home, John noticed that his parents were still at work. The drive way was empty and the lightls were off. He shrugged and opened the door, throwing his bags into the hall way.

It was early evening and the sun was still warm so John decided to go down to the beach. He lived near a cove which was usually quite empty during school weeks. He kicked off his boots and switched to some old trainers. He was already changed so that wasn't a problem.

He happily hopped out of the door, locking it behind him. It seemed nothing could wipe the smile off his face on this fine summer day.

As he approached the wooden stairs that led to the cove, it was empty. That was, appart from another boy about the same age as John, 16 or 17. John could only see the boys head because of the rocks but he didn't recognise this curly haired boy.

As he trotted down the steps, he tripped causing a loud thud.

"Ouch!" John whinned as he got to his feet. He rubbed the back of his head as he got to his feet.

John sighed and stumbled his way to where he had seen the other boy only moments before.

He was gone.

"Hello?" Called John. Perhaps he had been scared by John's loud entrance?

Towards the back of the hidden cove was a cave. Not many dared to go inside incase it collapsed but it was John's thinking place. The entrance was small but it widened out to reveal a large rock pool. The pool was about 6-7 feet deep and atleast 10 feet wide.

John loved to sit at the edge and watch the creatures inside swim and paddle. The bottem of the pool as covered in long strands of sea weed and even coral. It wasn't unusual to see crabs, fish, eals and sometimes even baby sharks!

John crawled into the cave. High tide wasn't untill 10pm today so it was safe to stay there for a while. He kicked off his trainers and dangled his feet in the cold water. He leant against the damp cave wall and closed his eyes, still smiling.

He listened to the quiet drip, drip of the water falling from the walls and into the pool.

While John was relaxing, a mop of curly brown hair slowly rose from the pool of water. It was followed by a head, torso and long golden tail. The tailed being swam towards the blonde boy leaning on the wall. His long golden tail whipped from side to side in the clear water, leaving ripples as it went.
