Briskly walking down the hallway, keeping my head down, I weaved in and out through the throngs of people gathered together in the aisle. The constant murmurs and whispers, the sideways glances that constantly followed me, they didn't bother me anymore.
I had let people continue talking, I no longer cared. The humans didn't know what they were talking about.
My name is Dawn, I am a werewolf, but not just any werewolf. I was a beta. A happy, happy beta. My Father is the Beta to Alpha Gabriel of the Silent Valley Pack. We were a small and peaceful pack. We had very strong and good alliances with all of the other packs near by.
We weren't a completely secluded pack, but we enjoyed the tranquility of being alone. Our pack was close. We were all one big family, although not biologically related.
Silent Valley pack was unique in many ways. We were one of the few remaining packs in north america to still be affected by the Goddesses curse.
The curse wasn't something that drastically changed your day to day life. It was simply because our ancestors had disobeyed the Godess. The curse was simply, ugliness.
Yep! We were all ugly! That is, until the day before we meet our mate. The Godess took pity on the children of our ancestors, and changed the curse, so that we could become beautiful once again when we meet our mate.
So...yeah. I'm pretty ugly. I mean, I don't look like some mutilated rag doll. I've just got pretty bad acne, my nose is kinda large, and I'm a little on the chubby side.
Again, I'm not hideous, but no one would ever go out with me.
Now, remember, not every pack is still affected by the curse. It's strange, but centuries after the curse was first given, packs began producing children without the curse, and then their children didn't have the curse.
Thats my background! Now back to the present!
I walked to my locker quickly and put my books inside. Grabbing my backpack, I closed the door and walked towards the exit.
I always left school halfway through the day. It was one of the other reasons I was frowned upon by peers at school. Even though this is a human school, the principal is one of the werewolves from my pack. My Father and the Alpha had arranged with the principal that all the werewolf children would leave school early everyday so that they could continue a much more, pack oriented type of education.
Reaching my destination, my five other friends were waiting for me at the door. There was me, Lillian, Derek, Magdalene, Marcus, and Jacob. Out of all of them, I was still the only one to have not found my mate.
Lillian and Derek were mates, and so were Magdalene and Marcus. Jacob's mate lived in Soft River Pack, a few miles away. She was still a sophomore in High School, while we were all Seniors. So It was decided that Jacob's mate would move in with our pack once she turned 18.
"Hey there ugly duckling!" Derek called out to me, and I rolled my eyes as Lillian nudged him in the stomach.
"That wasn't nice Derek." She growled, turning her attention back towards me.
"Sorry Dawn. Derek is just teasing."
"Hey! You know the story of the ugly duckling! The duckling was once very ugly, but when he grew up he was the most beautiful swan! I was complimenting her in a way!" Derek defends, only to be growled at by Lillian, a hint of jealousy in her tone.
"But you're the most beautiful thing ever babe!" He quickly corrected himself, wrapping his arm around her petite waist and kissing her cheek.
"It's okay. My mate will come when it's time." I smiled weakly at them.
