Jane was ravenous by the time the half siblings had sat down for dinner. She made herself a big plate of pizza, grapes, French fries, and apple slices. Before she could tuck in, she noticed Tidbit stand and carry a slice of pineapple pizza to a large fire place. He stood in line behind the Aphrodite girls, who giggled as he pushed a lock of hair behind his ear.
She grabbed a handful of French fries and cut in front an Apollo kid, who smiled and allowed me to. Jane watched as a buff camper wearing a red tank top with her hair pulled back tossed a large hunk of meat in the flames. "Ares," she said proudly, smiling to herself as the smoke from the fire turned a crimson red, curling into the sky.
The Aphrodite girls gave an offering to their mother, except a blonde, who winked at Tidbit and raised her voice so he could hear, "Hades." She would've been pretty, except for the fact she wore way to much makeup. Tidbit rolled his eyes, tossed his pizza in the flames, and gave an offering to Hephaestus.
Stepping close to the fire, Jane could smell a sensational amount of burning food amongst the wood, and her stomach growled. She touched her flower pendent, knowing who to give her offering to. She threw the French fries in the flames, closed her eyes, and murmured, "Persephone."
For a moment, nothing happened. No color tinted the smoke. Then, a heavy shade of blue, bolder and more plentiful than the other campers, rose and shaped a flower. Jane took a step back in fear. A shriek came from the campers, and Jane whorled, finding herself face-to-face with a middle aged woman. Her eyes were glowing bright green, and she clutched Jane's arms so hard the girl gasped in pain. She seemed dizzy, unstable.
"Death's children travel by night,
Awaking memories in the deadly cold.
A fire burning, seeing a fight,
Their Father's curse, they cannot withhold."
The woman's eyes fluttered, and she collapsed, leaving Jane paler than she had ever been, trembling more than she had with her stepfather. Tidbit moved suddenly, grabbing his sister. He cradled her in his arms, her head against his chest. She didn't remember when she started crying, and she didn't even remember Tidbit bringing her back to Cabin 13, all she remembered was the woman's eyes, the words she spoke, and Tidbit's protective arms.
