I nearly killed myself, racing down the stairs to the main lobby of my penthouse apartment. I hurriedly unbuttoned the front of my shirt, untying my tie and throwing it into my gym bag, then raked my fingers through my hair. My biceps strained against my tight dress shirt, begging to be released. "Goddammit," I whispered to myself. "First day back on the team and you're running late? What the hell, Isaac. What the hell?" I cupped my hands around my mouth and exhaled, inhaling my breath right back through my nose. Did this really work? I scrunched up my nose as my breath shocked me- I even put a mint in my mouth- for real right now? My breath reeked! "Jesus," I sighed. "To hell and back with my lack of a memory."
My stomach growled longingly for food, and I decided to stop by the McDonalds right inside College Campus. It couldn't hurt to miss the first 10 minutes of the first game, right? I laughed at the thought, mostly because I sounded insane. My patience with myself lately had been tremendously slim, and right now I was down to a 3 on the Socially-Stable-And-Totally-Not-Losing-It scale. Isaac Lockmann does not settle for a 3- but that's just where I was at in the moment. My stomach growled louder, but I held my head high through the awkward stares and looks from the people around me.
I walked towards the doors of the front lobby elevator, getting ready to leave to the private parking lot when I heard a jingling of keys- my keys! How could I fucking forget my keys? How else are you going to get into your car, dumbass?
Turning around on my heel, I practically ran back to the front counter- I was making a scene in the lobby, it being violently quiet except for my agitated breaths and the squeaking of my Jordan's on the polished granite floor, but I could care less. I was used to being the center of attention- not always for the right reasons, though.
"Good morning, Mr. Lockmann, sir," greeted the older front desk-man. I forced a smile and tapped my fingers on the counter while he turned around and took out his own set of keys, heading to a large row of cabinets. "Your keys, sir?"
"Yes, thank you," I said. My patience was super slim this morning, and I could sense a bit of sarcasm in my tone right after I said it. But who was I to take it out on this old guy? I felt sorry. I was Isaac freaking Lockmann- polite and respectful, witty and smart- and who can forget my gorgeous features? I smiled at the thought.
"Sir?"
I looked up, jerked out of my thoughts. The man was shaking my keys to my car in front of my face- how fucking embarrassing. Taking my keys, I thanked the man. He simply nodded and turned around, going to help another resident. Probably didn't want to deal with me anymore, and I didn't blame him this morning.
I ran back to the elevator doors and pushed the down button and waited for them to open. It was awkwardly quiet as I waited, and a buzz from my phone scared me. I took it out to see who the text was from. I almost groaned out loud and threw my phone on the floor- it was my ex, Abbey. Why the hell would she be texting me? I swear to God, I blocked her number. Reading her text, though- I almost threw up everywhere:
Hey, you
I cringed, bile rising in my throat. I swore under my breath as I continued.
Busy 2nite? Was wondering if I could come over and.. "hang out" with you again. You hungry? ;) xoxo- Abbs
I felt like burning myself alive. "Hang out"? Hang out my ass. She used me for sex then left me for a husky who "knows a trick or two," and likes tofu. Who the hell likes freaking tofu? Knowing what to do, I did it.
Not in your dreams, slut :) xoxo my ass- No Longer Your Property, Bitch
The elevator doors opened and I stepped inside, not yet looking up from my phone until I had sent the message.
My shoulder ran into someone else's. I instantly backfired a response. "Hey, watch it, would-"
I looked up and saw a beautiful girl with bright, sparkling blue eyes that shone like stars. Her eyelashes were so amazingly long and full- she didn't need mascara, and she wasn't wearing it. Her gorgeously long hair was parted in 2, a part for each shoulder. It was wavy and curled up and the ends ever so slightly. And, damn- it smelled amazing. Like Shea butter and vanilla. I took a quiet but deep breath, taking it all in. Her lips were the perfect shade of pink, and they even shimmered a little bit. She must be wearing lip gloss, I figured. God almighty, they looked so good. I scanned over the rest of her body- she was wearing sweats and a cozy sweatshirt, her hands tucked into the pockets. Her feet were covered by a pair of black and white Nike's. She had curves in all the right places and she looked so cute. Who is this girl? I have got to know.
She looked up into my eyes and we locked for a second, but she then turned away a bit. No, please- look at me again! I screamed in my mind. "Let me see your eyes."
The girl looked up at me again. She smiled a tiny bit. "What?" She rasped. Shit, her voice was really turning me on right now.
I stammered a little bit. Did she say something else? I wasnt paying attention. "W-wha?" I self consciously ran my hand through my hair.
She smiled a little more. Her teeth were pearly white and her smile totally completed the picture. I sighed in my mind. She was something, alright.
"You said, 'Let me see your eyes,'" she answered, giggling. I could only imagine the dumb look on my face. I said that out loud? Crap. She probably thinks im a creep now.
"I- I did?" I asked, a little bit embarrassed. This girl was making me weak to my knees. I tried to regain my composure, leaning against the wall with my shoulder. But I leaned too soon and almost face planted, totally missing the wall. I stumbled as I stood up straight again. She had a small grin on her face and her eyes were electrified with laughter. I dorkily smiled.
She nodded. "Uh-huh, you did." She looked up into my eyes again. "It- uh. It was nice bumping into you," shs said. "See ya around?" She turned to leave the elevator, but I grabbed onto her shoulder. "Wait," I said. "Are- are you needing to go somewhere?" I asked. "I can drive you."
She shook her head. "No, I'll be alright. Thank you though, Mr.." She looked at me, a quizzical expression on her face. She wanted to know my name- I smiled.
"Isaac," I said breathlessly, holding out my hand. "Isaac Lockmann."
She nodded and took mine, shaking it twice. Her hand was super soft- I could've held it forever. It fit perfectly- her smaller hand in my big one.
"Brooke," she said, a mischevious twinkle in her eye. "Brooke Waters."
My breath caught in my throat. Her name was beautiful. It fit her. I loved it.
I just stood there, staring. She gave me one last smirk and turned around, heading to the front doors of the lobby. When she got to them, she turned around and waved at me- then left.
