Beep! Beep! BEEEEEP! Phil's Buffy alarm clock went off. Phil groaned and turned around in his bed, his eyes still closed, his hand searching for the alarm. When he finally grasped it he pressed the OFF button and the beeping seized shortly after. Phil opened his eyes and glanced at the time displayed on the clock. 10:53 am. Did he really sleep for that long? Well, Phil thought, stretching his arms. Time to wake up, I guess.
After taking a quick shower and putting on a t-shirt and jeans, Phil stood in the bathroom and took a look at himself in the mirror. Hmm, not bad, he thought, brushing his long black hair out of his face. He headed down the stairs and towards the door. "Where're you going, Phil?" Phil's mom asked him. "Library, to study,"he answered. "Oh, okay," Phil's mom chuckled. "Bye! Stay safe!" she called after him, right before Phil left the house, closing the door behind him.
Phil walked across the street, nodding politely at those whom he walked past. He saw Starbucks down the road and decided he would go in before heading to the library. He waited for the light to change and looked both ways for any cars before crossing and entering the coffee shop.
Soon after it was Phil's turn to place an order. The man at the cashier recognized him and smiled.
"Aye, Phil, good to see you!" he said.
"Good to see you too, Charlie." Phil smiled back.
"lemme guess, the frosted caramel cappuccino again?"
"You know it."
"Of course. So how is your mother doing?" he asked.
" She's doing well, thanks for asking."
"That's good. Tell her I said hello, will you?" Charlie said, writing some words on a paper.
"I will." Phil said.
" Alright, I gotta get to these other customers before they get mad and complain to the manager. Talk to you later, 'kay, Phil? I'll make sure to get your coffee soon."
" Okay, Charlie."
Phil took a seat near the window and waited. He reached into his pocket and realized he had forgotten to bring his phone with him. "Dammit," he sighed. He resorted to staring out the window to pass time instead. He watched the people walking down the street, some seemed to be in a hurry to get somewhere, while others seemed to be wandering aimlessly, not in a hurry to be anywhere anytime soon. He watched as the cars zoomed by and a group of pedestrians ran in front of them, trying their best to make it to the other side without being ran over. Then he noticed a happy couple walking past, the boy's hand around his girlfriend's waist, the girl smiling up at him. Noticing how happy they must be together made Phil realize how long it's been since he'd ever felt that happy with someone else, how long it's been since he held someone's hand. He barely even remembered what it was like to feel love or loved by someone, besides his parents and brother. Suddenly,Phil felt a pang of loneliness as it sunk in that he was after all alone.
"Phil Lester?" he heard a cashier call. Phil stood up and went to go pick up his coffee."Thank you" he said as he was handed his drink. He turned around and left to go to the library.
