November 05, 2008

Dan stayed lying on his bed, staring up at his ceiling. He had had the strangest dream last night, of being friends with a blue eyed  boy with messy ginger/  light brown hair, and in the dream he was laughing at something the boy had said. He was trying to decipher the dream when he heard his mom's voice from across the hall.

"Adrian!" She shouted.

"Sorry, mom!" he said back.

"Everyday, Adrian!"

"I said sorry," Adrian repeated quietly.

Dan smiled. He didn't have to be there to know that his mom had tripped over a pile of clothes Adrian had left in his doorway.

"When are you going to learn to clean your room?" his mother cried.

                                                                LATER THAT DAY

"Dan? You haven't left your room since morning, are you okay?" Dan's mother asked as she walked into his room .

"Yeah, I'm alright," Dan mumbled in response, not taking his eyes off his laptop.

"You've been in that position for 5 hours! What could you possibly be doing that is so entertaining?"

Dan turned his computer so she could see. "Tumblr?" She frowned. "Dan, wouldn't you rather go outside and get some fresh air? Or go for a walk. It's good to get some exercise."

Dan made a face of disgust." No, thanks."

"Well, at least go meet the neighbors. I met  a woman yesterday who has a son that's not much older than  you, and he doesn't live too far from here. I'd bet you two would be great friends."

Dan didn't respond; instead he continued to scroll through Sebastian x Ciel fan-art.

His mother sighed and sat at the corner of his bed. " I realize that the move has been hard for you and Adrian. It just happened so quickly. I was going to tell you sooner, but I just couldn't find the time."

Dan snorted. "Right."

"But don't you think that making a friend would make it easier for you to get accustomed to this place?"

" I have a friend," Dan stated plainly.

His mom raised her eyebrows. "Really? Who?"

"Louise."

"Ooh, it's a girl. Do I know her?"

Dan shook his head. "Nope. She lives in Northampton."

"How have you met her if she lives in Northampton?"

"Well, technically, I haven't actually, like, met her in person."

His mother frowned. "Do you even know what she looks like?"

" I've face-timed her a few times. We were supposed to chat again today, but she said she was busy."

" Than how do you even know her?"

" I met her online."

" Oh, of course, an internet friend. What about an actual friend who doesn't live across the country?"

"I'll pass."

Dan's mom put her hands oh her hips. "That's it. Dan, I've had enough of this. You're going to try out for rugby."

Dan stood up. "But why, Mom? Games at school is already bad enough!"

"Because I told you to!"

Dan groaned. "That's not fair!"

" I don't know a single 17-year-old boy who doesn't like sports."

"That doesn't mean I do!"

"Well, learn to like  it, because I'm taking you anyways. Plus, you can make friends with your teammates." Dan's mom glanced at his outfit. "Now, put on some actual clothes and meet me downstairs." She left and closed the door.

Dan looked at himself in the mirror.  His hair was a curly brown mess and his t-shirt was over-sized and wrinkled. He sighed and brushed and straightened his hair, then put on his Wildcats shirt and some shorts and went downstairs.
