''Marmaduke!'' I yelled when I arrived in the kitchen to realize that he was not there.
''Luna.'' He said from behind me.
''Marmaduke. I'm so worried.''
''About what?''
''Maria. She is never going to find out about the Moon Princess, and her being one.''
''What makes you say that?''
''Oh, just only the fact that she's a perfect little angle that wouldn't know how to shoot a bow if her life depended on it.'' I spat.''Give her a chance.'' Marmaduke suggested.
''The 5000th moon is coming this year, we'll all be dead before she finds out that a moon princess even exists.'' I yelled.
''Ah, but you forget, the book.''
''The book doesn't mean anything. I am just going to have to keep an eye on her from now on.'' I said and left the kitchen.
I walked into Maria on my way out of the kitchens.
''Luna.'' She said as I passed her without even an glance her way.
I turned to face her with an ignore expression on my face. ''Yes, Maria.'' I said in fake sweetness.
''I was wondering...''
''What exactly?''
''Do you, by any chance, know where the book that my uncle took away from me, is.''
''The library.'' I said as if it was the most obvious thing in the world, and it was.
''Yes, clearly.'' She said and chuckled a bit. ''But where?''
''Ask Digweed, or Marmaduke. They should know. Now, if you'll excuse me. I have a lot of--'' I had to decide what I was going to do. ''Thinking to do.'' I said and walked off.
That wasn't a complete lie. I was going to think. I arrived at my room and unlocked the door. As soon as I was inside, the door locked, I ran to the door that led to my balcony and opened it. I needed fresh air to cool down. I sat down on the balcony and started to go through the days events. I came up to my conversation with Marmaduke. Maybe he was right. maybe I should give Maria a chance to prove herself. What harm could it do? I shook my head to rid the thoughts. I needed to leave a clue. I decided that I would leave the key to the pearl chest inside the book. Not that it'll help. I knew that the Moon Princess took the pearls. Not the De Noirs, nor the Merryweathers. Nobody else knew this. I began to wonder how I knew all this. It was as if by default. The 5 000th moon was coming quickly. I could sense it. I made up my mind. I needed to set Maria on the right track. That's the least I could do. Afterall, she was our only hope. I felt bad about not telling her where the book was earlier. I did know, I just didn't feel like talking to her at that point in time, so...
Soon enough I was getting quite drowsy. I needed to sleep. I closed the doors and lay down on my soft bed. It was extremely comfortable. I soon drifted off into sleep, only to be woken a few hours later by the sound and feeling of wind rushing onto my face at immense speeds. I sat up and noticed that the balcony doors were wide open. I went to go and shut them, then locked them tight. I was sure that I had locked them.
I needed to get up anyway. I had to put the key in the book. I walked to the library, careful to be very quite. I slipped in and used the candle I was holding to see the titles of the books. I found the one that I was seeking and pulled, to reveal a secret compartment a little down the row. I walked over and noticed that it was empty. Of course she had taken it. I had to give her the key somehow, though, without her knowing that it was me. I made up a brilliant plan to go and put the key in the book myself, right now, while she slept. I ran up the staircase, into the tower, to find her sleeping, in the bed that I used to call my own. I spotted the book on the desk in the side of the room. I walked over to it, as quietly as possible and opened it. I looked at the page holder and slipped the key on it. So that only the top part with two pearls was showing. I then sealed it and looked over to Maria. I was actually beginning to think, that with a bit of my help, she might actually succeed. I was about to leave when I saw the fire place move slightly. At first I thought that it was just my imagination, but then I saw it completely open. Out walked a women, who I recognized as Loveday De Noir. She was my dads ex, if that's the right word to call her. She didn't seem to see me, but I sure as hell saw her. She was carrying a dress in her arms, a beautiful red one.
''Loveday.'' I whispered. She looked in my direction and smiled.
''Luna. It's been so long. My, look how grown up you are.'' She said coming closer to me. I placed a finger on my lips, gesturing her to be quite and not wake Maria.
She came closer to me and hugged me. She was, or used to be, like a mom to me. I treated her as one, and she treated me as a daughter. When she left because my dad was mad about her being a De Noir, I felt like a piece of me left, too. After my mother died, I was completely broken, and when Loveday came, I felt like that broken part could be mended, but when she left, it just got worse. God, I'd missed her. I knew for a fact that my dad had too. He had spent months on horseback, searching the woods for her after she left. He never found her, I got the impression that he didn't try hard enough, I mean she was very beautiful, therefore hard to miss.
We left Maria's room, and walked up to mine. We sat on the balcony and caught up. It was great to see her again. We spoke until I drifted off, yet again, into an easy sleep, knowing that everything would be fine.
