I growled softly to myself, filled with hatred of the building and the people who run it. I finally decided to call the cops on the place.
"911 what's your emergency?"
"Um, hi. I work at Crest Ridge institution right outside of town and I'd like to report inhuman treatment here," I said nervously. I was hiding in the bathroom with the door locked. I didn't know if someone was going to burst in and maybe even kill me. I have no idea.
"Okay, what's your name?"
"Jordan. Jordan Montana," I muttered. I tried to keep my voice down to not draw attention to the bathroom.
"Okay, Jordan. I'll send someone to check out the institution. Stay safe and avoid anything unnatural." With that, the receptionist hung up. I was surprised that he didn't tell me to stay on the line considering that's usually what people in the movies do.
I shut my phone off and did my best to quietly flip the dead bolt. When it clicked, I looked left then right before escaping from the confining cubicle. I nodded at the people I passed with a small, skittish smile.
It took about fifteen minutes for them to get here. I snuck out a side door and met them in the front.
"Are you Jordan?"
"Yeah but if anyone asks, will you please keep me anonymous? Maria'd kill me if she found out..." I trailed off.
"Of course. I'm officer Baldwin, by the way," he extended his hand.
"Nice to meet you," I shook it.
"You too. So what are your concerns?"
"Well to begin with, I've befriended a patient here and he said he's gone through a lot here. Electrocution, to be more specific."
"You said he's a patient?" Officer Baldwin looked at me sympathetically.
"Yeah, is there a problem?"
"Well if I use this in court, the patient could be considered unreliable by reason of insanity."
"Damn it," I muttered. "So the patients can't testify?"
He looked at me skeptically. "I mean they could, but the jury might not take their evidence as the whole truth. Make sense?"
"Yeah," my tone turned to sorrow.
"Look, Jordan. I want to help you, I really do but I don't know how to if you're the only reliable witness. I'm sorry." The officer sounded sincere but for all I know, it could all just be an act made perfect over many years of practice.
Wow. I'm beginning to question the truth a lot lately. Thanks a lot, Crest Ridge.
"Okay, can you at least take a look around?" I pleaded.
"Yeah, I could. If you want to stay anonymous, go in before me. I'll be in there in around ten minutes. Just going to take a look around the area," Officer Baldwin gave me a slight smile and left me alone.
I snuck back in without any problems.
"Trick!" I whisper-yelled to him. He turned his head to face me. His eyes had regained the brightness and shine that I missed the past few days and his cheeks had more color to them. He looked healthy again.
"Hey, Jordan!" He was enthusiastic again.
"Hey," I gave him a small hug. "How've you been holding up?"
"I'm getting better, thanks," he smiled, sweetly.
"So the police are here," I whispered. "The officer, Baldwin is his name will be in here in a few minutes to check it out.
"Don't bring him in here. The last officer that came here," Patrick paused. He looked terrified. "Let's just say he didn't come back out. Maria staged the officer's death as a car crash or something. Don't risk it, Jordan." Patrick's eyes grew wild with fear. "Tell him to leave!"
"Okay! Okay! Keep your voice down," I reminded him. Patrick nodded.
I walked right out the front door and sprinted around the building. My forehead began to perspire when I found the officer digging around in the woods out back.
"You have to leave!" I shrieked. "They killed the last one!"
"But you said tha-" I cut him off.
"You need to go. Maria'll kill you! She's done it before!" By now, I couldn't contain myself. Tears began to stream down my cheeks slowly at first. "I saw what they did to Patrick!"
"Wait who's Patrick?" I ignored him.
"Please! You have to leave!" I tried the hands-on approach. I pushed Officer Baldwin towards his car. He could've easily thrown me off of him with how muscular he was but he didn't. The officer got in his car and drove away.
There goes my last hope.
