Sophie stood at the head of Fitz's bed, taking several deep breaths as she moved her hands towards his temples. Just as her fingertips almost grazed his skin, a sudden click and weight broke her concentration. The Cognate rings. Sophie mustered a sad smile from the memory. Had it really only have been a couple of days? It felt like years.
Sophie drew a final breath as she pressed her fingers to his temples, opening her mind to Fitz's.
It felt like Sophie was spiraling farther and farther down into an endless abyss. It was pitch black, no light to be seen. It was so unlike Fitz and yet familiar at the same time. Sophie extended her reach, trying to feel for any trace of warmth to lead her to the nook.
Fitz? Sophie transmitted. It's me, Sophie. I'm here to save you. Please be here.
She repeated the words several times. Transmitting memories of his family, friends, and all the times they had shared. Happy memories, places, sounds, smells, anything she could think of. Sophie had eventually built a safe haven around herself, of all the things she ever cherished in her life.
And there it was. The spark of warmth appeared, so faint, she almost missed it. She cupped her hands around the fragile thing, letting it sink her deeper and deeper into the seemingly endless abyss.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Sophie arrived at the nook.
All that awaited her was cold, empty nothingness.
Fitz! she transmitted over and over. Please, please don't leave us. She pleaded as she started to Inflict.
Happiness, joy, excitement, surprise, hope, tranquility, peace, belief, beauty, safety, kindness, determination, Sophie sent them all out. The emotions seemed to be swallowed by the darkness. Sophie pushed harder, transmitting the memories the Inflicting was associated with simultanously. It wasn't working. She had only healed a mind twice, but this was much, much, more guilt than she had ever seen. How had Fitz's held out for so long?
Sophie had an idea.
Fitz, no one blames you for anything. There was nothing any of us could have done. Sophie pleaded.
Still nothing.
Please, Fitz. Please don't leave all these people who care and love you.
Love.
It all clicked.
Sophie focused on all the people, places, and things she loved, surprised by the sheer amount of it, letting it build and grow and expand until it became a surging rage of purity and bliss. She let it flow out, letting it stream through the abyss.
Dread filled every cell of Sophie's being when nothing happened.
All the memories had faded but one.
Sophie and Fitz were sitting in Alluvetrere, doing Cognate training, in order to do that, they had to share all of their secrets with one another. Sophie was going to tell Fitz that she liked him, but decided against it.
Tears dripped down Sophie's face as the memory faded away.
Love. What did that mean for Sophie?
She loved so many people in so many different ways, when she lived in the Forbidden Cities, she had always felt lonely and outcasted, but all of that changed when she met all of these wonderful people when she had been brought to the Lost Cites by Fitz.
