It's the first day of my freshman year in a new high school. My mom is hovering and insisting I wear a specific outfit. I take a look in my closet at all the high end designer clothes. Less than a year ago, I never had any of that.

My long blonde hair has to be curled just so and I pluck and small stray eyebrow hairs. I apply my make-up, I place multiple accessorizing bracelets on my wrists, and my mom nods in approval. God, she's annoying!

I march downstairs with her right on my heels and proceed to the kitchen to grab something for breakfast. The cook has prepared pancakes and a bowl of fruit. Brent, my stepbrother, is already seated waiting for his plate to be done to his satisfaction. Chances are he already sent back the plate for some stupid reason.

Brent is a senior this year, captain of the football and baseball team, student body president, and in the top ten percent of his class. Mr. All American is a Mr. Pain in my Ass.

Brent looks over at my mom after glancing at me and nods. Apparently, my appearance won't embarrass him at school. Why in the hell are we catering to this jerk? Oh yeah! We must maintain the image my mother insisted being married into.

I wish I could just live with my dad. Unfortunately, he travels during the week for work and the judge ruled in divorce court that living with my mom was a more stable environment. Some stability this turned out to be!

My dad lives on the other side of town...no designer clothes and make-up is optional. Snap backs and beanies are always welcome there. That's where I can just be me, no image requirements. I'll get to see him this weekend. The thought warms my heart.

"We better head out. We can't be late." Brent says antsy. He almost looks like a toddler doing the potty dance wanting to leave.

I roll my eyes, pick up my backpack, a couple stray books, and head out the front door behind him. I climb into the passenger seat of his perfectly detailed black land rover. He pulls out of the driveway and we're off.

"Cailin, let's get a few things straight. We get to school, I'm going to introduce you to the only people worth knowing. DO NOT EMBARRASS ME!" Brent demands.

"Calm your man tits, Brent! I won't embarrass you! Don't worry! I won't damage you precious reputation. I get it!" I snap back. What an ass!

He scoffs and says, "I mean it!"

I just stare out the window watching all the driveways zoom by. I entertain myself trying to catch a glimpse at the houses at the end of those driveways. In this neighborhood, the driveways are long and the houses are huge.

I have been dreading this first day at this school ever since my mom remarried. If these students are anything like Brent, this year is going to seriously suck. He demands that I befriend who he introduces me to. This is Brent's world and I should just be lucky to be breathing the same air as him.

My anxiety begins to rise as we turn into the student parking lot. Brent's chest puffs up as he pulls into the "Student Body President" marked spot. I roll my eyes and sigh.

I climb out of the car and follow behind Brent closely as he struts across the campus. I observe as all eyes turn onto him as he walks by and waves to everyone like a pageant queen. All the girls gawk at him and then take one look at me and glare. Morons! He is my STEPBROTHER!!! I want to scream it from the tallest building.

"Wait right here." Brent stops me abruptly and continues walking into a quad with all the markings of seniors everywhere you can see. Nothing like peeing all over your territory! I can only assume this is the infamous "senior quad" that he was looking oh so forward to having unlimited access to.

I stand there like a loner waiting for him as he high fives, fist pounds, and waves at everyone within sight. He stops and talks to a handful of guys and they all look over at me at the same exact time. Way to be obvious about what you're talking about, boys! One takes his phone out of his pocket and makes a call. Once he hangs up, he walks back over to me with Brent.

"This is Ryan. His sister, Alexis, is a freshman and will be here in a second to show you were you need to go and who you need to know." Way to be condescending, Asshole!

Ryan looks me up and down and reaches out to shake my hand. Wow! A little courtesy? Maybe Brent should take a couple lessons.

Ryan looks like every other boy here. Same hair cut, same style of brand name clothes, expensive watches, and sunglasses that could easily be worth enough to buy a private island in the Bahamas. At least all the boys are nice eye candy...that's about all they appear to be good for.

"Hi." Ryan says and flashes a fairly warm smile at me.

Just then, this tall, tan, beautiful girl walks up dressed to take her place on the catwalk. Her long black hair flows behind her with every step. She grins from ear to ear when she notices Brent and my stomach churns. I really don't see what the big deal is about him. He is a first class jerk.

Brent smiles back but not as big as hers. He says, "Alexis, this is Cailin, my stepsister. I need you to show her the ropes and make sure she's hanging with the right people."

"Not a problem." She answers. Then, she turns to me, "Ready?" Uh...do I have a choice?! "What's your first class?" She asks as we walk the opposite direction of the quad.

"Geography." I answer as she looks over my shoulder at my schedule.

"It looks like we'll have history and Language Arts together. After history is lunch. I'll introduce you to everyone then."

"Okay. Thanks." I really don't know what else to say. I know nothing about this girl and she really isn't exactly giving me the warm and fuzzy feeling. She does give me directions to my first class and we go our separate ways.

The bell rings as I am about to step foot into my first classroom.

"See ya, Dad!" was all I heard before I collided with someone walking out and our books fall to the floor.

"I'm sorry." I say as I squat down to pick up the mess. I was staring down at the ground avoiding eye contact with everyone. I wasn't watching where I was going.

"Why are you sorry?! I ran into you! It should be me apologizing!" Laughs the male voice with a thick accent that I can't quite place.

The laugh made me smile and I look up to this blonde haired boy...at least I think he was blonde. I got completely lost in his crystal blue eyes that were staring right into mine.
