Obviously Ivar has a disadvantage. Before he can get close to winning he has to bring Sigurd to the ground.
I've seen them fight before. It always starts with Sigurd kicking the life out of Ivar. Then, eventually Ivar can knock him over. From there it's just who is stronger that day.
"Come on Ivar. Let's get this over with." Sigurd stands in the clearing ready to start.
A smile spreads across Ivar's face and he comes at Sigurd. As I suspected, Sigurd easily overpowers him.
They've been fighting since they were little, so they both know each other's tactics. The fight is slow at first, due to all the dodging and quick punches that don't make much of a difference.
Finally, Sigurd makes a fatal flaw. When he goes to kick Ivar in the side Ivar is able to grab his foot, knocking him to the ground.
They roll around in the dirt, hurting each other in every way they can. A hard punch to Ivar's face sends chills down my spine.
Sigurd gets on top of Ivar so he won't be able to escape his hits. Punch, after punch, after punch. Ivar won't be able to take much more.
Just as doubts start to cloud my thoughts, Ivar sends his fist flying through the air. A punch to the side of Sigurd's head, pushes him off of Ivar.
They are both really fighting hard. It's hard to tell who is punching who. Sigurd knees Ivar in the ribs at least three times.
Ivar elbows Sigurd in the gut then hits his throat. More hits go to Sigurd. After a bunch more punches I notice Sigurd isn't fighting back.
Standing to get a better view, I realize that Sigurd is unconscious. Why is Ivar is still attacking?
"Ivar! He's out cold." He still doesn't stop, he doesn't even look up at me. I rush over to them and use all my strength to pull Ivar off of Sigurd.
He tries to push me away to get back to Sigurd. "Ivar, he can't fight you anymore. You win." I place myself in between him and Sigurd.
Again, Ivar tries to get to Sigurd. To stop him, I grab Ivar's shoulders. "Look, Ivar! Look."
Ivar observes Sigurd's still body with a confused expression. I guess he didn't realize that Sigurd was unconscious.
He laughs a little at the sight of his success then tips over on his back. The fight really wore him out.
I sigh out in relief. From first glance Sigurd seems fine so I worry about Ivar. "You okay?"
Bruises line the side of his face along with some blood and lots of dirt. "I won. That's all that matters."
It's perfectly silent in the woods. My eyes stay glued to the ground. I don't know why, but I can't seem to look at Ivar.
When I finally glance up at him, I try to figure out what he's thinking. "So. We're getting married."
"Is that such a bad thing?" When he smiles my heart stops. I tilt my head away from him, realizing that I'm blushing.
His hand cups my chin and I can't help but look at him again. Our lips are almost touching.
Ivar leans in slowly and our lips lock, just for a moment. I pull away when I hear Sigurd groaning.
I didn't want Sigurd to think that I was trying to rub it in his face. I know Ivar will brag for the rest of their lives, but that doesn't mean I have to.
"Sigurd?" Leaving Ivar's side I rush to the aid of Sigurd. "Here, I got you." I help Sigurd stand.
Sigurd pushes me away when he gets his footing. Anger is all I see in his expression as he disappears into the woods without a word.
The afternoon sun warms my face. That's when everything hits me. I'm getting married. Tomorrow. To Ivar.
"I'm gonna find Floki and Helga. You should go to your mother and tell her that you won." Before Ivar can say anything, I venture into the woods.
I'm not going to go straight back home. I need some time to think. Wandering aimlessly around the vast, empty woods gets my mind racing.
What if Ivar just fought for me to prove something to his brothers? What if we were meant to just be friends?
I can't help but think about Sigurd. He's had a crush on me since before I can remember. Me being with Ivar makes me feel like I'm betraying Sigurd.
Eventually, I find myself back at my house. "Helga? Floki?" My voice echoes through the empty house.
"Helga? Floki?" I call out again. Where are they? The sun is going to set soon, and since I don't see another option, I go back to Kattegat.
On my way there I bump into Hvitserk. "There you are!" Hvitserk rushes over and hugs me, lifting me off the ground.
I laugh "You were looking for me?"
"Well of course! Mother is having a celebration for you and Ivar tonight. Come with me, we're late!" He grabs my arm and drags me along with him.
When we get to Kattegat he pulls me right to his house. Hvitserk opens the door and a flood of noise rushes out.
Tons of people are inside, laughing and drinking. "I found the bride!" Hvitserk announces happily.
People all around me cheer and raise their glasses. I can't help but smile. Hvitserk tugs me to the other side of the room.
Ivar, Ubbe, Helga, Floki and Queen Aslaug sit near the thrones. When Ivar notices me, a big smile appears on his face.
"Thora. Welcome." Queen Aslaug says with a small smile. She doesn't like me, she doesn't really like anyone.
"Yes. Welcome to the family Thora!" Ubbe says as I sit in between him and Ivar.
"I'm just sorry you have to marry Ivar!" Hvitserk jokes.
Ivar throws his cup at Hvitserk, we all laugh. "At least I have a woman."
"Only by force." My head spins to find Sigurd talking. The horned cup in his hand shows me that he's already drunk.
Ivar goes to say something, I grab his hand and squeeze as hard as I can. He gives me a confused look.
"Don't." I whisper. He sighs and rolls his eyes, but he doesn't say anything to Sigurd.
Sigurd sits at a table on the other side of the room. I watch as he drinks cup, after cup, after cup.
The rest of us sit around laughing and drinking for what seems like hours. At one point someone passes me a bowl of mushrooms.
Personally, I hate the mushrooms. They make me feel weak and tired. Still, I grab a couple and eat them all with a smile. If I don't the guys will laugh at me.
The effects are instant. The room is blurry and my head pounds. I stumble outside to get some fresh air.
Somehow I end up in the woods, all alone. At least I thought I was alone until I heard leaves rustling and twigs snapping.
Maybe I should figure out if someone is following me. I'm too dizzy. I collapse to the cold ground, staring at the stars.
I try to get up but my body and mind seem disconnected. I can't move, I can't even talk. Looks like I'm sleeping here.
"Thora." A familiar voice says quietly. "I'm glad I found you alone."
