The morning after my wedding night I wake up to an empty bed. "Ivar?" I call out softly, still a little dazed from sleep.
I throw on some clothes and search the house. It is empty. "Where are you?" I mumble to myself.
Walking outside, I am greeted with the bustling sounds of people and the smell of bread. Instead of looking for Ivar, I decide to take a walk.
Through Kattegat, through the woods, somehow I end up at the sea. Much to my surprise Ivar is sitting in the sand, starring out at the water.
I think about leaving, giving Ivar some more alone time. But, I feel like we should talk... it might be a bad idea.
Settling in the sand next to him I ask "Have you been here all morning?"
"Yes." He keeps his eyes locked on the sea. Not knowing what to say, I grab some cold sand and let it fall back through fingers.
Ivar sighs loudly then throws a rock into the water. "You can't tell anyone about last night."
"I didn't plan to." I say rather defensively. "You can trust me Ivar."
He makes me so mad. Why can't he just get that I love him. That I will protect him in any way I can!
For the first time since I sat down, Ivar looked at me. "You don't understand Thora! If any of my brothers were to find out-"
I interrupt him "I do understand! Your brothers would use it to mock you. They would use last night as a way to embarrass you till the day you die! I know Ivar."
"No you don't." He whispers, his cheeks red with anger. "To them I'm the weakest. The one to pity or the one to humiliate. They will never see me as an equal! And if they find out... "
He faces the water again. "If they find out, I will lose what little honor I have in their eyes."
I stare at the sea too, unable to come up with the right words. The winds blowing and the waves crashing together are the only noises.
"They won't find out." my voice is still a little shaky with anger.
He scowls at me then glares at the sand. "They always find out Thora! Always."
"Well fine. If they do, then we'll just have to kick their ass. Show them not to mess with you!"
Rage takes over, I stand and start pacing around. "I don't care if I have to challenge the whole city! I'll fight everyone if it makes you happy."
"Thora." Ivar says softly.
"Anyone who thinks your weak is an absolute idiot! You may not have use of your legs but that has just made you work harder and longer than anyone else."
"Thora." His voice is stern and deep, but I keep pacing.
"No. I know life has been hard for you, and your brothers haven't made it any easier. But I've always been there for you and I'm not gonna stop being there anytime soon."
"Thora." Ivar repeats loudly "Sit down." I obey and reclaim my spot next to him.
"I love you and- and I'm sorry I didn't trust you." he was whispering, he has always hated saying sorry.
"I love you too." I scoot a closer to him and lay my head on his shoulder. We stare out at the sea, in silence.
"IVAR!" Hvitserk comes running up to us. "Come on! You have to see this."
"See what?" Ivar asks as he situates his legs so he can start crawling. Ivar and I both look up at Hvitserk expectantly.
"Father's home."
