Sapphire's POV:
The final bell rang for school to be over and I took my time getting to my car. I was leisurely putting things I wouldn't need back into my locker when Peridot came up next me.
"And just why is Ms. Always On Time currently not already home?" Peridot asked me, staring through her glasses as if trying to see through me.
I sighed and shut my locker. "I'm in no hurry to come home to my dad, who's most likely ready to give a lecture about having detention on the first day of school. I know my dad will hear me out, but my mom's the worst when I get in trouble." I told Peridot while walking towards my car.
"Stay strong, Sapph, who knows, your mom may not even come home until you're asleep." Peridot said encouragingly.
"Yeah. Who knows."Ruby's POV:
After the last bell rang, I headed to the gym for the first basketball practice. Amethyst, Jasper, and I would be recruiting new girls this year, being captains and all.
Amethyst jogged up to me in the hallway. "Hey Rubes. How was lunch detention with the nerd?" Amethyst asked teasingly.
I rolled my eyes. "Lunch Detention with Sapphire was just fine. Boring as hell with Holly Blue Maggot yelling at me a bunch but fine." I replied, lacing my voice with sarcasm. Holly Blue Maggot was a nickname for Holly Blue Agate that's been circulating around the school since she became the head of punishment.
"Anyway, lets focus on recruiting some girls to this team." I said as we entered the gym and went into the locker room. Just as a I took off my shoes and put on my basketball shoes, my mom called.
I put my hand up to my head and rolled my eyes. "What does she want now- hi mom!" I said, faking happiness to not sound suspicious.
"Why did your teacher call my house and tell me you got detention?! On the first day of school you already managed to get into trouble. Tell me how that's possible!" my mom yelled.
Ok, so she's furious. But I've gotta get out there and start tryouts! I took a deep breath and started speaking. "Mom, I assure you the detention wasn't for something very bad and it'll sound really unfair when I explain, but I can't tell you right now because I have to start tryouts for basketball but I swear to the Moon Goddess that I'll explain in full detail when I get home." I said as calmly and quickly as I could.
"Fine, but if your explanation doesn't add up, you're grounded." my mom said. I breathed finally and I realized I was holding my breath.
"Thank you so much mom! I'll see you at home, love you bye!" I said and hung up the phone. I ran into the locker room, shoved my phone in my locker, and ran out into gym. Lots of freshman eyes stared back at me as a went to stand in between Amethyst and Jasper.
"Alright, newbies! Grab a ball and start dribbling!"~Time skip to later~
Ruby's POV:
I went out to the parking lot and saw our car with Regina at the wheel.
"Get in loser I wanna go shopping!" She shouted. I just rolled my eyes and threw my bag in the back seat and got in the passenger seat.
"Mom's totally mad at you for some reason I don't remember but she wanted me to tell you that your explanation better be good or else you're grounded." Regina told me as if she couldn't care less, and I know she didn't. We rode home in silence. When we got home, Regina dropped me off and headed to the mall. I went inside to see my mom sitting in living room, arms crossed, mouth in a frown. "Ruby you'd better get to explaining 'cause my patience is wearing REAL thin." my mom said, very clearly angry.
I took a deep breath and launched into the story of how I met (more like tripped) Sapphire, how Blue Diamond was being totally unreasonable, and how Sapphire stood up for me. I paused, and finally said, "So that's pretty much what happened."
My mom waited for a few minutes before speaking. "Okay. I believe you."
"Really? Just like that? Thank you thank you thank you so much mom!" I said in disbelief. I threw my arms around her and gave her the biggest hug I'd ever given.
"Your story checks out Ruby. And I'm actually proud of you for being so nice to that Sapphire girl." my mom said, hugging me back. "Now get off me, you're all sweaty!" she said finally with a playful smile. I laughed a little and went upstairs. Man, I have the best mom.Sapphire's POV:
I pulled up into the driveway of my house, parked, and put my head on the wheel, moping slightly.
"Sure Dad will listen, but mom is an entirely different story. How can I get through to her? This is hopeless!" I said. I shook my head, took a deep breath, and put on a confident face.
"Pull yourself together, Net. You're overreacting and freaking yourself out. It was only lunch detention, you can talk your way out of this. You're a Net, and you go and get." I told myself. I got out of my car and rushed into the house.
I ran in the front door, trying to get to my room before a confrontation. I was stopped in my tracks by a commanding voice.
"Sapphire Clarity Net, what trouble have you gotten yourself into on the first day of school?!" my dad asked, furious. I turned around to face him. He was sitting in the living room on his favorite chair, with a hard expression and arms folded across his chest.
"Dad, allow me to explain. The lunch detention was merely a misunderstanding. It started when the first bell for class rang..." I began and I started on what happened with Ruby Gar, knocking over a hallway of girls, Ms. Blue Diamond rashly giving detention to Ruby, and how I stood up for her and landed a detention myself.
I was holding my breath and playing with my hair waiting for my dad to answer to my story. He knew what I sounded like when I was lying and I knew I wasn't lying. Finally, after what felt like an eon, my dad said something.
"Sapphire, although a detention isn't close to a good start to your senior year, I believe you, and I'll excuse it just this one time. I'm proud that you stood up for someone and took responsibility for your actions so you're off the hook." my dad said, letting his expression soften into his regular loving smile.
"Dad! Thank you! I knew you'd understand. I've gotta get started on a bit of homework now, but still thank you!" I said, very satisfied with how that went.
I grabbed my bag and went upstairs into my room and plopped down onto my queen-sized bed and breathed, tossing my bag to the side. I have the best dad.
I put on my comfy light blue tank top and some leggings and started on my homework. That's when I heard the front door open and slam, and the clack of high heels on the wood floor. "Oh no." I groaned, putting my head in my hands. "Now I have to try and get through to mom."A/n: Ta da! I thought a little "slice of life" chapter about Ruby and Sapph would be a good edition to the plot to show how their lives are outside of school. Anyway, what happened at the basketball tryouts?? Who is Sapphire's mom?? And what did she say to her?? Find out next time!
