Chapter 1

My back hurt all over. I didn't see why they had strapped me to this chair like they do to the royal children. I was a servant girl. The free time they gave to the other servant kids was never free time for me. While they got to run and pay I was forced to learn everything that noble children learn. I was an orphan. No one knows who my family was, except maybe the King. After all he was the one who fond me the night five years past when I was barely a few days old.

"Focus child!" the mean nurse snapped at me.

I opened my mouth to apologize but shut it quickly, remembering the King's orders. I wasn't allowed to speak to anyone but him.

"His Majesty says you aren't to leave that chair till you finish your stitching. Perfect he says. You best not be late to chores, you'll be punished," she placed the embroidery onto my lap.

Nodding my head I picked up the embroidery and set to work. My stitching wasn't as small and neat as the ladies at court but I think that was because I wasn't as old as them. I tried my hardest to make my stitches perfect, the King hated imperfection. For each of my mistakes he would either force me into this chair for an hour or he would take away one of my meals. The King never hit me-no one was allowed to hit me. Instead my punishments usually had to do with food, my studies, or my chores. For this reason I tried my hardest to do things perfectly to please the King.

The door behind me opened, causing the nurse's head to snap up in surprise. No one ever came into these rooms while I was studying. It would cause a scandal to break out in the courts. Judging be the depth of her curtsy, our visitor had to be royal.

"Afternoon, your majesty"

"Afternoon miss. Leave us," the King's voice rumbled from behind me.

I couldn't see him because the back of the chair was above my head and my shoulders were strapped to the chair.

"Yes your Majesty," the nurse scurried out of the room, shutting the door behind her.

The straps holding my shoulders were released, but I knew better than to slouch my shoulders in relief with the King standing behind me.

"Show me your embroidery Cherie"

Standing as gracefully as I could I turned and curtsied low to the King before handing him my work.

"Here your highness. I hope it pleases you"

"You are improving Cherie. Even your posture looks straighter. How are your studies going? Are you learning all you can and getting good marks?"

"Yes your Majesty"

"Good. I will be checking with your tutors to make sure you are getting the marks that I agree with. You are not speaking lies to me are you?"

"No your Majesty"

"I hope not. You know how I hate those who lie, do you not?"

"Yes your Majesty. You cut off their tongues so that they may not utter one false sound again," I said nervously. Hopefully the tutors would not lie to him, for their sakes and mine. I did not wish to be forever mute.

"Ah you have been learning. Now come with me. You will be starting a new type of lessons today. Follow me silently, understand?"

"Yes your Majesty," I knew that he was the only one who was allowed to hear me speak.
