~ 12 YEARS LATER~
It's amazing how quiet the castle is before the sun rises. Thanks to my many lessons from the King, my footsteps made no sound. Just like my voice, flitted through my head.
Shaking my head I made my way through the many corridors towards the King's chambers. I hope he won't ask of me to give him the gossip that I've heard. The only gossip I have heard has been about the King's off and on friend Lord Watkins. Whenever Lord Watkins is involved in any scandals the King is sent into a rage.
Giggles escaped from behind his chamber doors. I glared at the door. I hated when he dragged some of the other maids into bed. Occasionally he would get one with child and I was always forced to slip something into their drink. It saddened me that I had to kill an unborn child but what the King ordered had to be done.
Mary, a maid five years older than me slipped out of the King's chambers still in her night clothes. I stood in the shadows letting her pass- there was no way I was going to aggravate her this early in the morning. Once she was around the corner I walked to his door and knocked four times to let him know who it was.
"Come in Cherie," the Kings' voice sounded through the door.
Opening the door I stepped in and shut the door behind me.
"No one but you and me are within my chambers Cherie, you may speak," I kept my eyes forward while he redressed himself.
"You sent for me your majesty?"
"Cherie how many times have I told you to drop the title?"
"It would be highly inappropriate for me, a lowly servant not to address you according to your status, your majesty?
The King growled under his breath and stalked towards me. I kept still holding in the amusement caused by his actions.
"The fact that you are in my bed chambers, alone, in the early hours of the morning is inappropriate, no?" The King stood in front of me with his hands on his hips.
"It would be if I was dressed in the likes of Mary's attire and everyone in the castle didn't know that no one was allowed to touch me, including the nobles- then and only then would this be deemed inappropriate, your majesty," my voice was calm even though I was holding in laughter.
"Humph. You are too smart for your own good sometimes"
"That would be your doing, your majesty" I said smugly.
The King glared at me before going to sit next to his fireplace. "Sit down Cherie, I have a few things I wish to discuss with you"
"Yes your majesty," I walked over and sat on the ground in front of the King.
"Say your majesty one more time and I will strap you to the chair for two extra hours Cherie. Now I have received a few complaints from the male servants of late about being wrongly punished by you. Do you have anything to say towards that Cherie?"
"The did not heed your warning and orders of refrainting their advances onto my personale. I just gave them reminders to not try it again"
"Did you not show your displeasure towards their advances?"
"I did your majesty"
"Then why did you hit them? I taught you to fight so you can defend yourself not bully others Cherie," the King frowned at me.
"They said that I most likely wanted their advances since I could not voice the words to tell them to stop. That is why I resorted to hitting them, your majesty"
"I see Cherie. Shall I get rid of them for disobeying my orders?"
I answered carefully, knowing he was testing me. "No, your majesty. Nothing actually occurred. Although to enforce your orders they should be assigned twice as much work for a month to be punished for disobeying your orders. They should not be paid extra but the same amount as normal so that their families do not suffer from their mistakes"
"Very good Cherie. Your schooling has been beneficial towards something after all"
I smiled at the King. "Is that all you wished to discuss with me your majesty?"
"Have you over heard any scandals that are going on within my court?"
"There are a few small scandals going on. Was there someone you wanted to hear about in particular your majesty?"
"Yes I do Cherie. Does any of those scandals pertain towards Watkins?"
Sighing knowing he wasn't going to like what I had to say, I looked him in him in the eye. "Yes, your majesty. He is involved within a scandal currently"
"Continue Cherie"
"Lord Watkins, has been seen entering her majesties-" the King cut me off in a hard tone.
"What?"
"-Lady in waiting rooms frequently your majesty," I finished, taking note of the relieved sigh that left him.
"You gave me quiet a scare for a moment there Cherie"
"My apologies your majesty"
"Sit for a moment. I'm going to call Watkins here. I need a word with him," the King stood from his chair and headed towards the main entrance of his chambers.
"Do you wish for me to leave your majesty?"
"No Cherie, now no more talking though. Understood?"
"Yes your majesty"
Sitting down more comfortably I listened to the King give one of the pages orders to fetch Lord Watkins and some tea before coming back towards me and sitting himself comfortably back into his chair.
"What do you think he shall say to defend himself this time? Outright lie to me face? Or shall he try to avoid answering my questions?" The King mused looking at me.
I raised my eyebrow at him and refrained from speaking like he had ordered me.
"Sometimes I regret my decision for your muteness. Your period of silence won't last for much longer Cherie. I have plans that shall be set in motion soon enough," the King smiled at this.
A knock sounded from the door. That was fast- he must know that he is in trouble, I thought fighting back a smile at how cowardly he is.
"Oh and Cherie, don't think I didn't notice how you kept saying your majesty. We shall deal with that later, once our little talk with Watkins is over," the King said before yelling out calmly to enter.
