Week: 5, Of The Invasion
Nixies POV
I don’t know when it began, I just remember a bang, and screaming. So much screaming. People running all around me as they tried to escape the giant woman scooping up people left and right and swallowing them whole. I remember I couldn’t scream, I could just stand there in horror and shock as I watched her scoop up my mother, and swallow her. This doesn’t happen in real life, I was supposed to get a job, marry my boyfriend, get old and die. Not watch as my neighbourhood gets devoured by a giant.
It has been days since then, or weeks, hell it could have even been a month. My brothers and I escaped, but just barely. We ran with the crowed that day following them into an underground bunker that held one hundred of us uncomfortably. I sat in the corner with my head in my hands as I listened to my brothers have a thumb war. They didn’t see it, I witnessed it alone. I was alone with theses thoughts that they would never understand. They didn’t even know, I couldn’t bring myself to tell them. They thought she still might be out there, searching for us. They wanted a way out to find her.
But then they remember.
The screaming, the blood, the running.
And they realize, although I know they don’t want to believe it, that our parents might not be around anymore. That they might be gone.
Might.
But I knew that there was no 'might', they were gone… well our mother is gone.
I look up out of my hands when I hear a fight happening. ''What do you mean there is no food left?'' someone yelled at another person.
“We ate the last of it yesterday, we rationed all that we could.” The person responded calmly, but it was barely heard over the screams and yells of other people.
“No food left!” “We are all going to die!” “LET US OUT!!” could be heard all though out the bunker. I sighed and put my head back in my hands and let out a sob. I knew this was how it was going to end, I was going to starve or be trampled on.
“EVERYONE CALM DOWN” my brother Blaine yelled, one by one everyone turned and looked at him. “We are not going to die, we will just have to send out groups to look for food.”
“Oh yeah, and who is going to want to do that?” a random person yelled back. He had a point, everyone in here saw what happened outside the bunker, and no one was willing to experience that again.
“My siblings and I will!” Blaine yelled back, sounding confident.
“But you're just kids,” An older lady responded.
“Who else would do it?” Elek said standing beside Blaine. When no one stood up Elek nodded “Exactly”. I went and stood beside them, I was short in comparison, but I was fast and agile. Blaine and Elek were either six foot or more, while I was only five feet tall. “We'll go, but if we do not come back within three days, assume the worst and don't come after us.” Elek said. Since we went into the bunker with nothing, we left with nothing but fear in our hearts. My fear consumed me fully, I would not have been leaving, but my brothers were, and we have never been apart since we were six.
Elek and I were twins, we were also mixed raced. Half black, half white. Elek was a lot darker then me though; he almost looked like a full black person, with his black hair, and black eyes. Meanwhile I could've been mistaken for a white person with a dark tan, my hair and eyes are darker than Elek's though. Blaine was adopted and fully white, he has hazel eyes that change to brown in the winter and brown curly hair. We were all the same age, which is 18, except Blaine was a month older. Blaine was the strongest, he could lift three of me (I weigh 110 pounds), Elek was the smartest, it is rare now-a-days that you could find someone who was excellent in math, and brilliant in art. And I was the peace keeper, I guess you could say, I would break up fights that occurred between the two, settle any disagreements and decided on things.
“While we are out here we can look for Mum and Dad,”Elek said smiling happily, “I bet they are worried about us.”
“Yea,” Blaine quickly replied and we reached the hatch. He unscrewed it and pushed up. As soon as it opened dust flew in. Blaine climbed out and helped Elek and I up. As soon as I looked around I was instantly sad, what used to be a nice little suburban area had turned into a wasteland. Houses were destroyed, trees were uprooted and rotting corpses covered in red slime laid everywhere as if something puked them up everywhere. I held in bile and Elek and Blaine threw up on the ground. We didn't know what time it was but night was quickly approaching us.
“Let's just look for a place to sleep tonight.” I mumbled, they nodded their heads and we began to walk down the street. The neighborhood looked deserted besides the bodies. We soon came to a house that looked a bit more intact than the other houses and walked inside it. Before I stepped in it I realized a weird symbol carved into the siding of the house, it was a large thin circle with a smaller thicker circle in the middle of it. I went in the house and it looked as if it had been rummaged through. We went into the kitchen, but there was no food, we then searched the bedrooms for clothes and found some. I found some tights and a huge male t shirt. I slipped them on and sighed.
Clean clothes.
I laid down in the living room with my brothers, but found no sleep. Dawn came slower than I expected.
Is it sad that my own book is scaring me, and makes me wanna cry? Probably, I get scared easily....
