John's POV:
Peggy sat across from me in her desk. She was vigorously writing on a sheet of notebook paper, her hair periodically falling in her face. After a few moments, she looked up."Okay bestie, you gotta tell me if this is any good."
I looked at her and cocked an eyebrow. "What is it?"
"It's a note for Maria, to confess my love."
"You're a..." I paused for a moment, Peggy was a lesbian and I- I just knew that she was going to regret saying something, especially at our age. "a lesbian?" I finished my sentence.
"Yeah!" Peggy said and folded up the note. "Maria is too, so it's gonna be okay." She reassured herself. "Give this to her?" She suggested and shoved the note in my face.
I nodded and took the folded up piece of paper. I stood up and spotted Maria. I headed over to her and slipped her the note. On my way back, Alexander -my best friend- stopped me.
"Will you talk to me at recess tomorrow?" He asked.
I suddenly got all flustered, not really knowing why. "I um- I'm uh..." I stuttered. "Sure?"
"You don't sound so sure." He remarked, giggling.
I swear, his giggle could have made me melt. He's been my best friend for ages,
why am I starting to feel this way? I shook my head, not wanting to think about it. "I'm sure." I said with a convincing smile."Got it." He winked and returned to his schoolwork.
I turned away, blushing, and ran back to Peggy. I sat down and started to breathe quite heavily.
"You alright?" Peggy chuckled.
I nodded. "Yes." I confirmed.
Peggy nervously looked over her shoulder at Maria reading the note. After about a minute, Maria looked up at Peggy. She nodded and was smiling. Peggy smiled like a dork and looked back at me. "Holy... the hottest girl in school likes me!"
"Sure is nice to have someone that likes you back." I muttered.
"Why are you being so salty? We're friends, act like it."
"I'm sorry!" I snapped. "It's just... Alexander."
"What about him?"
"I think I have a crush on him, after all these years of just being friends. And I don't even want to be gay!"
"Don't sweat it, being gay is fine. Just tell Alex how you feel." Peggy shrugged and looked down at her work. "I hate math." She concluded.
I sighed, as the teacher dismissed us from school.
I got home and my father greeted me. "Hey Jacky! How was school?" He picked me up and spun me around.
I lay limp in his arms, not wanting to feel excited or happy. "Fine." I responded in a monotone voice.
He set me down. "You sure? What's up?"
"I have a crush on someone. But I don't think he likes me that way."
My dad paused for a moment. "He?"
I forgot he didn't like people who were gay, I should have been more careful.. Especially considering the fact I'm only 10. "I meant she."
My dad raised and eyebrow and sighed, not completely convinced.
"I mean it! I meant she. Her name is uh..." I went through all the girls in my class. "Peggy. Peggy Schuyler." She probably wouldn't mind.
"Mhm, sure." My father said disapprovingly and turned away.
After he left, I sat down on the front porch steps and buried my face in my hands. I should of known better, liking someone of the same gender is wrong. My dad told me that, but Peggy thinks it's fine. I need to follow my dad's rules, become a better child if I ever want his approval. I felt hot tears run down my face.
I really was a screw up, wasn't I?
