I actually loved having lunch in the cafeteria. Being the Bad Boy's best friend had a lot of perks. People let me cut in line all the time. Honestly it's a privilege often enough. I do feel guilty once in a while but mostly Jace's conceited traits have rubbed off on me.

I hadn't seen my idiot best friend all morning because we didn't have the same classes. Nothing for me to ogle during lessons. (Lessons happened to be very boring).

I went in line to get food and of course got the front place immediately. They actually served good food here. Well the burgers, hotdogs and pies anyway. The samosas were too greasy and the rest were small sweety snacks. I got a can and a hotdog. (Don't wanna scare the rest of the student body as I devour the burgers -cavewoman style).

On my way back to sit down at our usual table I happened to see a really hot boy coming in my direction, well the direction I came from, the food line. Brown hair that almost touched his eyes and reached his ears, dark green eyes that twinkled a little and a swimmer's built. He had nothing on Jace but he was definitely a catch.

Of course, once I'm distracted I always have someway of embarrassing myself. I didn't step right in mid-daydreaming and tripped over my own feet. My little tray was tipping forwards just as mystery boy caught my arms and pushed me back into an upright position. Fast reflexes he had there because I was going to face plant the floor.

"Thank you." I said trying to sound calm but my voice came out shaky and I felt heat ruse slowly to my cheeks.

"No problem. I'm Nick Humphrey." He said extending his mega hand.

"Kara Layton." I failed to balance my tray on one hand so that I could extend my hand and shake his. He noticed my little struggle and withdrew his hand.

"Sorry." He apologised and his cheeks were tinted with pink.

I grinned, "Aaww you're blushing!"

His cheeks turned a deeper shade of pink and I chuckled.

"Sorry. It's a force of habit to point things out." I apologised for making him more pink.

He smiled and nodded, accepting my apology.

"You're new, right?" I asked.

"Yeah, it's my first day here." He sounded content.

"Are you joining any sports then? I don't know swimming maybe? Unless you're like a basketball player or something then that's fine too you know. Er unless you play something like ping pong then it's pointless as in there is no ping pong here you know, I mean don't know? You could also-"

"I'm a swimmer. You need to slow down or at least throw one question at me at a time." He teased.

I blushed so hard it hurt, for real.

"Sorry." I mumbled looking down at my tray.

To someone else outside the conversation it looked like a romance novel type of boy-meets-girl interaction. I blushed more when I realised a lot of people were watching us. Generally a cute scene but of course Jace came and killed it.

"Who are you and what are you doing with her?" Jace hissed in a low voice that made me feel a little scared.

"I'm-." Nick was cut off by Jace, rudely, before he finished talking.

"Whatever. I don't actually want to know." Jace sneered as he grabbed my arm and started dragging me with him, away from Nick.

"Hey!" I yelped, yanking my arm from his grip.

I glared at Jace, "I was having a conversation over here before I was rudely interrupted. Would you get a grip Jace? I'm not your girlfriend or property and that was uncalled for." I said flustered.

Jace's P. O. V.

She looked pretty adorable with her frustrated face. Yeah, yeah, your bad boy's a softie. Just one soft spot though.

I didn't like this, I didn't like this at all.

She was willingly talking to him and he was willingly talking to her.

I felt jealous of course. She was my best friend and I wanted to keep it that way. She liked me more than a friend and I liked her more than a friend too but it just wouldn't work out. I could do something really stupid and then we'd never talk again. Inconvenient. So it's better that we are best friends. Better than nothing. Plus I never worry too much about losing her attention. Boys steer clear of the bad boy's best friend, although the crude comments in the boys' locker rooms never seize to amaze me. Horny idiots.

It's probably a dick move though that I talk about other girls in her face. Yep, it is. But it helps things. She believes that I don't want her in that way and I think I like her less when I'm talking about someone else, only to like her all over again the next morning.

Our friendship is weird though. She happens to be the good girl at school. As you would've assumed or had an idea, I'm the quarterback, my straight A's are almost effortless and a little street fighting here and there makes things a little interesting. Oh, not forgetting street racing. I do a bit of everything and it worries Kara a lot.

Okay, back to asswipe and my Kara.

"Fishboy, why don't you take a hike now?" I said a little peeved.

"Nah man. I've got to finish my conversation first. I'd actually like to get her number first, maybe take her out sometime." He said smiling at her and pulling out his phone.

She smiled back at him and blushed a little making her look adorable. Dammit she's mine.

I grabbed the phone, shoved it in his hands and grabbed her arm in an iron death grip this time and dragged her with me. The whole student body was gaping at us and Kara had a scowl on her face. She turned her head towards the idiot and mouthed an apology, sighed then looked at me.

"Why Jace?" She whispered, her eyes were glossy. Dammit! Why is she crying now? Girls...

We were outside now and I pulled her to a random empty table. I kept up my poker face and she looked down at her hands on the table, letting her brown, wavy hair fall in front if her face and shielding it from my view.

After some minutes she looked up and straight at me. She sniffed, her eyes reddening and tucked her hair behind her ears. She had the usual little bump on top of her head because she pushed back her bangs back.

"You are such an asshole!" She said sounding hurt.

"Honestly," she continued, "I usually say this as a joke but you really are a Grade A dick. I mean you know I like you, uhm a lot, but you tease me for it. What's new. Oh wait one person talks to me and you act like a possessive jerk!" She was raising her voice so she took in a large breath to calm down.

"You're making this hard for nothing. I don't understand why you just couldn't let me talk to one person. Am I supposed to have one friend. One that only takes pleasure in making my life a little prison? I'm quite the dramatic person but you know exactly what I mean Jace. Just tell me what the fuck that was back in there." She whisper-shouted.

My poker face disappeared. I sighed.

"I'm sorry." I said blankly and stood up to leave.
