Waterproof

I look around me and see Rhys lying in a heap on the ground, I couldn't tell what was fake blood or what was real, I shivered at the thought of what he did to him.
Before I can even think I run after the man that saved me, seeing him in the distance, he wasn't far. I could still feel the tears in my eyes. My head felt heavy.

"Wait" I shout but he doesn't. I can't catch my breath but before I know I nearly crash into him. He holds me at arms length like I might burn him.

I don't say anything, I never thought this far. My voice has disappeared and he lets go.

"I think the words you are looking for are thank and you" I wish I could see his facial expression, is he annoyed?

I am glad its dark so he can't see the blush that's spread across my face.

"Um yeah thank you" I want to kick myself as he goes to walk away again.

"What's your name?" I shouted it a bit too loud, he was only two steps away. I half expect him to keep walking but he turns towards me again.

"Cain. Are you ok?" He looks down at me and I shrink back, I realise how far away from the house we are. Did I just run from a situation into another one?

I shrug my shoulders and try to stop the tears. "I'm Madison"

He nods in acknowledgement. Does he even realise what he just saved me from? I feel a shiver go up my spin at the thought and hug my arms to me.

"You should go back Madison." The thought of going back and seeing Rhys. The tears escaped but I knew he couldn't see.

"Thanks again. Cain." I think he smiles but I can't be sure.

I'm annoyed at Jen for making me wear a silly costume, actually I'm annoyed that she even made me come to this stupid party. Its too dark to see where I'm putting my feet, at least I didn't wear heels. Silver lining and all that. I laugh to myself in the dark.

I make it back slower than I would like and spot Jen straight away, and run towards her to tell her what happened but she shuts me off.

"Madison? where have you been?" oh she was mad.

"Um" I'm speechless. This isn't what I thought would have happened.

"Some nut job has hurt Rhys, I thought he might have done something to you too when I couldn't find you."

Surely he got what he deserved.

"We need to go NOW! Neighbour has phoned the police and I think Rhys is away to hospital. You should have saw him Mads." I can see the tears spring to her eyes and I suddenly feel sorry for Rhys and regret my decision to follow a stranger into the dark away from the house. But he did save me?

"Is he ok?" I regret the question as soon as it leaves my mouth.

She doesn't answer me but half drags me out the house towards Jared's car.

I don't know if I am annoyed at myself for feeling sorry for Rhys or putting myself in another situation where it could happen again.

A sense of dread washes over me as I get into the car. I look to Jared to see if he's drunk.

"Is he able to drive?" I ask Jen and I can tell she is worried too.

"Unless you girls want to walk the 40 minute walk home you, which you are more than welcome too."

"Jen come on" I step outside the car but she doesn't follow me.

"You can't be serious? He's not sober enough to drive a remote control car!"

Jared puts his car into gear and drives off. I can hear Jen shouting at him.

"Shit"

I feel the first few spits of rain and groan. Of fucking course! I feel like I want to stamp my feet like I did when I was little and didn't get my own way. Great party this has turned into.

"Madison?" I swing my head to the side looking around for him. I recognised his voice straight away. He was standing across from on the other side of the road next to what I assume is his truck. I just stare at him not knowing what to do or say.

" Are you going to get in or just stand around? I assume that was your ride that drove off" he moves around to the passenger door and opens it for me. I stay silent.

" Look I promise I'm not a serial killer, I've not had a touch of drink all night. I just want to get you home safely" He raises his eyebrows. "So are you going to wait around for god knows what or get in the car?"

"No murderer admits to being one to his victim!" I shout over at him trying to hide my smile.

I think he smiles but I'm not sure. "I didn't say I wasn't a murderer just not a serial killer" he laughs at himself.

"If you kill me, I will come back to haunt you and kill you? Deal?"

"Deal, now get in the damn truck because I'm not waterproof"

I laugh and run towards his truck, the rain is coming down heavy and fast. I trust him and get in without a second thought.

I look at my phone the entire time inside Cain's car, waiting for a reply from her.

"You know staring at it won't make her reply any faster"

"It might, thanks for this. I probably would have walked home" He cuts me off before I could finish.

"and caught pneumonia" he turns to me and I see the hint of a smile.

I smile back and lay my head against the window. The rain beating against the truck made my eyes heavy.

I drifted off to sleep.
