Chapter Five

Nathaniel Mathers was not what I really expected of Linley's cousin, Linley the flamboyant pixie blonde, reaching just over five-foot with a smile that never left her face seemed to be the complete opposite of the stern-faced lawyer.

At first I hadn't really tried to expect anything when I got out of the taxi and saw the building where the office was. I was used to buildings that were over twenty stories high, bustling with successful people in suits and arrogant expressions, Copthorne Global only associated with the best after all. This building was in an area I didn't often frequent, I almost felt out of place standing on the sidewalk in my tailored pants and blazer, and at only eight stories high I didn't even have to cramp my neck to see the top of it.

I trusted Linley though, and this was her cousin I was seeing, she said he was good so he must be.

When I exited the elevator, Nathaniel was on the sixth floor, I was pleasantly surprised to see how nice it looked. A large reception desk took up the majority of the room which proudly boasted the company name, a few chairs were along one wall and the potted plants dotted about gave the room a serene feeling.

I approached the reception desk and kindly requested directions to Mr Mathers office, which the elderly lady gave and asked if I would like a hot drink brought me, of course I politely declined, I wouldn't want her coming into the office and overhearing the reason I was here, or even realising who I was.

Nathaniel stood from the desk when I entered after knocking, a tight professional smile spread across his face, it was then that I couldn't help but notice the differences between the cousins. He was a little taller than me, five-eight or five-nine if I had to take a guess, wearing a button-up white shirt and black dress pants with a blue patterned tie, something I don't think Linley would ever consider wearing, quite often her 'office' attire strayed close to the borders of acceptable, she preferred colour and artful items rather than the boring greys and browns often seen in the office space. He had a slight crease between his eyebrows which I would guess was caused by him near on constantly frowning or wearing a serious expression, if Linley came close to having any lines on her face it would be laugh lines. The auburn hair with a slight messiness to it took me away as well, as far as I knew, everyone in Linley's family had blonde hair, guess he must take after the other side.

He held out his hand and I took it in a firm handshake, you don't grow up in a big financing company without learning some tricks after all.

"Nathaniel Mathers." He introduced, indicating to the chair across from his desk.

"Serena Copthorne." I replied taking the offered chair. "Thank you for seeing me on such short notice."

He smiled that tight smile once again. "Anything for Linley, she said it was rather urgent."

I nodded. "Yes unfortunately it is. I'm not entirely sure how much she told you."

"Not a lot actually, she seemed under the impression that it is a very delicate matter."

"She also seemed under the impression that you are the type of man to abide by client confidentiality, no matter the circumstance."

His face turned even more serious now, if that was even possible. "I assure you that I am. Besides, if I wasn't it would probably be safe to say your family would sue me for millions of dollars."

A sarcastic smile then spread across my face. "They have their uses."

"If you don't mind me asking Ms Copthorne, why haven't you gone to your own family lawyer about this issue? I was under the impression you had always been given the best and fairest legal advice."
