Chapter Four

"What's your number?" Christian suddenly asked when he pulled to a stop in front of my apartment building, I turned to him confused. "In case I need to call you about this divorce thing." He added on only talking slower like I was stupid.

He pulled his phone out of his pocket before I started rattling off my number, straight after my own phone started ringing inside of my bag.

"There now you have my number as well." Christian said, shutting off the ringing. "Call me if you need anything." He had turned to look at me, the sentence he said seemed innocent enough, we were married and going through a divorce after all, but there was something in his eyes that I couldn't quite pinpoint, a deeper meaning behind his words that I couldn't quite understand.

I shook my head before gathering my things. "Yeah sure. See you 'round."

I walked to the front door of my apartment building, hearing Christian's car pull away from the curb. I pulled my phone out of my bag whilst waiting for the elevator and saved the unknown number that had called me, even though I was fairly positive I wouldn't need to call him for anything any time soon.

As I neared my apartment door I began to yearn for my comfortable couch, long gone was my lazy Sunday instead I had a rather eventful one, but right now Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream and a good movie sounded like the best laid plan I had ever heard. My plans were foiled after I opened my door though to find Sadie and Linley lying across the couch watching some reality show I couldn't give two hoots about.

"You know, that spare key I gave you was meant to be for emergencies only." I announced, gaining their attention.

Sadie gave a secretive smile. "You know we don't class emergencies the same. Case in point, Lee and I told you we were coming around today but you wouldn't open the door, worried that you had come to harm I used the emergency key to get in and check."

"And when you found the place empty?" I enquired raising my eyebrow.

"I got a text from Sammy saying some shit had gone down, he wouldn't elaborate but I figured it would probably be best if we waited until you got home to see how you were doing, must admit you took a bit longer than expected."

"Sammy text you?" I ignored the implied question in her answer.

Sadie's forehead creased into a frown. "Of course he text me, he always does if he thinks something wrong with you."

It was then that all the emotions came running back, the emotions I had so adamantly hid from Christian. My Dad had disowned me, Sam turned away from me, and Mother couldn't even bare to look at me. Sadie and Linley saw the change of emotions on my face almost immediately and stood up, rushing over to me just as the tears began to escape.

They wrapped their arms around me and lead me to the couch, the sobs escaping from me shuddering throughout my body. I couldn't say how long I cried, Sadie rubbing my back and Linley whispering words of comfort. By the time I shed the last of my tears it was darkening outside, though it was already late afternoon by the time I got home, so I didn't find that too alarming, a pile of used tissues lay on the coffee table and my face no doubt looked like a bomb site, I was well aware of the fact that I did not look attractive after a crying jag. Red swollen eyes, make up messed up and blotchy skin, yeah just call me the female goddess of beauty.

"Do you want to tell us what happened?" Sadie asked softly, I could clearly see the concern written all over her face, the same as Linley though she looked a bit in shock as well, I couldn't blame her Linley had never seen me this way before, we only became friends after I moved back to New York after college.
