4. Explain to me

Kara's pov

I was watching tv when I heard someone knocking at the door.

"Hey, Alex. How did it go?"

"Well, I think Maggie and I broke up." she said, while trying to hold back her tears.

"What? Come in."

"I proposed to her and she said no. She left the apartment."

"What are you going to do?"

"Well, I packed my stuff. Can I stay here for some time?"

"Of course, you're always welcome."

"Thank you, Kara." and she started crying into my arms.

The next day

I went to Maggie's work so I can ask an explanation for her rejection to my sister's proposal.

"Hello, Maggie."

"Hey, Kara. I assume that Alex told you."

"Yeah, and I would want to know why you said no. My sister loves you so much, and can't stop thinking about you. I thought you felt the same way about her. Clearly, I was wrong."

"You don't understand it, okay?! I love your sister but I can't do this with her." Maggie said angrily.

"What?! Spend the rest of your life with her? She really cares about you!"

"I've got abandonment issues, okay!? That's why I said no to her proposal. I'm scared that she's going to leave me after some time."

"Are you insane? Alex is crazy about you, she can't stop talking about you."

"You know how I got those issues? Before Alex, I had a girlfriend for a very long time, we were an item for exactly 5 years. Her name was Charlotte Montgomery, she was my first girlfriend after I came out of the closet. For our 5-year anniversary, we were going to Paris. I was driving the car and on our way to Paris, I spontaneously proposed to her. We had an accident before she could even answer the question. I survived it, but Charlotte passed away. That's when I decided I would never love someone again. I still think about her every day. Then, I met your sister and I finally felt normal again. When she proposed, I thought about Charlotte and every detail came back. I never told you this, because I thought it might scare Alex. I don't want her to leave me like Charlotte did. Something inside me broke when she died. And now, I think that I love Alex even more. My heart would stop beating if she left me."

"Maggie.... Alex would never, ever leave you. But you have to tell her this. She's staying in my apartment and is eating all my ice cream. She will understand it, and we'll be there for you, no matter what."

"Thank you." Maggie said and gave me a hug.
