As Alistair had told Azeri, we had two days until the battle against this horde of darkspawn was expected. And We spent those days resting up and getting to know each other a bit more. Alistair told us of his time in the Chantry, and how bad a child he was half the time. His stories were always very entertaining, since he had a tendency to break anything serious with his jokes.
Azeri told us of her past as a Dalish elf. She told us about the reason for her becoming a grey warden, which was just like mine. At least in the aspect of having no choice. She told us that she has been exploring with a childhood friend when she came across something strange. Upon touching it, the taint was spread to her friend and the only way for her to survive was to become a warden.
We bonded, really. There wasn't much else to say on the subject. Azeri brought up Morrigan often, and was evidently yearning to see her again. I found quite adorable that she acted the way she did. I also found it strange that she and I got along together so well, since the Dalish didn't exactly like the City elves. They were said to be weak among the Dalish, since we lived among the humans. Under their thumb, treated like filth. She told us about the saying among the Dalish, "We are the Dalish, keepers of the lost lore, walkers of the lonely path. We are the last of the elvhenan and never again shall we submit."
I envied her.
I envied her pride.
It was something I was never allowed to have among the alienage. A little pride would get us killed, and I was a prime example of that. I tried to defend myself from being raped, and almost got executed. But she could walk freely and announce that she would not be forced into their slavery and their poverty. No. She was proud, and I wanted to be that proud of what I was.
Alistair and I had bonded as well. We seemed to just click. It had been decided that Alistair and I would be lighting the beacon together on the night of the battle. Neither of us were pleased with our task, since it would require little to no fighting and apparently we were both blood thirsty. Azeri was going to be fighting in the battle itself, and I suppose you could say we were jealous of her. But we joked of it.
---
Alistair looked around. We could hear the sound of the beginning battle in the distance, and we knew it was only growing closer and growing harder. I looked up at him, awaiting his command. I decided I wasn't going to be the one accepting any responsibility. He sighed and looked down at me then smiled.
"Well, we should go shouldn't we? They will be needing Loghain's men soon?" He asked as if my response would truly matter. He began off toward the tower in which the beacon sat, and into battle. We crossed the bridge with a bit more difficulty than what was expected since the darkspawn were firing things at us. But we continued with no problem, up until we met a mage and his Templar outside the tower. The mage seemed relatively unfazed, however the knight was hyperventilating.
"Th-Their ever where!" He yelled at us as we approached.
"What's everywhere?" Alistair responded, furrowing light brows at the man.
"The darkspawn!" The young man responded, and Alistair looked back at me with concern now laced in his expression. "They came up out of the ground. Everyone in the tower is dead besides us. We managed to escape."
Alistair got a small smirk at the corner of his lips since he was pleased he was going to get to actually join battle, then without a word began leading me and the two new companions into the tower. About half way through I took lead, growing impatient with him. I began to lead, though it didn't matter. We reached the top floor, and like the dumbass I am, I wandered in happily assuming we were safe then. However I was roughly grabbed by Alistair, and before I could ask why he extended an arm toward a large, monstrous, being towering over the beacon. I gasped out of fear, and the beast turned around and met our glares with its own. For a minute there was silence until it leaned forward slightly and let out a deafening roar (Along with a good amount of spit and a foul smell).
I jumped back slightly, but Alistair remained valiant. He charged into battle, forcing the beast back with a rough hit with his shield. I didn't stand around any longer. I charged into battle quickly, thrusting my blade into the things shin and pulling it down as if it were a leaver. I cut it open, and cut it deep causing it to drop to one knee and attempt to pull weight off the injured leg. I then did the same with its arm, starting at the shoulder and ending at its elbow. As it released another deafening scream, this one more pained, Alistair hurried to find the right spot to kill it in one blow. He leapt from his spot, and dug his sword into the things forehead. As it fell back he hurried to stab it again, two more times in the face then once in the throat.
When it was surely dead, he crawled off it, and hurried to the beacon where I was already bent trying my best to light it. As soon as it was up, I stood again and smiled up at him feeling rather victorious. I could tell he did too when he patted my arm the way he did. But in our silent celebration, we failed to notice the new threat. It was too early to be celebrating our victory, because when we turned we saw a swarm of them standing before us. We were completely surrounded.
I don't remember much of the battle...
However I remember thinking if it was this bad for Alistair and I, how would it be for Azeri and Duncan down on the battle field?
I remember watching our two other companions, the templar and the mage, die.
I remember defending Alistair and getting exhausted but barely making a dent in the attackers.
I remember falling, but I still tried forcing my way to Alistair in attempt to protect him.
I also remember thinking I was going to die...
