So much was happening at once. First, everybody came in and hugged me, then Leo showed up from who knows where, then everybody was kicked out, except for Annabeth.
Oh gods, Annabeth.
She looked so much thinner than when I'd last seen her, and not in a good way. Her eyes had dark bags under them, and she seemed to be almost shaking. Her gorgeous grey eyes had lost their sparkle, and I blamed myself for every bit of it.
I loved her so much. I really, really did. But did she love me back? Did she ever really love me?
Annabeth sat down on a stool next to my cot and began to rant. "I'm so, so sorry- I never wanted to hurt you. Athena threatened to hurt Bobby and Matthew if I didn't break up with you, and I couldn't stand to see them hurt, and... and..." She broke down in sobs again.
This wasn't her fault. It was Athena's.
"Hey, it's alright," I said as softly as I could, and reached out to hug her, but I still couldn't sit up very far. Annabeth accepted my hug and cried on my shoulder. I just rubbed her back until she stopped crying. I started to softly sing her favorite song with my cracked voice:
You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine,
You make me happy,
When skies are gray.
You'll never know, dear,
How much I love you.
Please don't take,
My sunshine away.
Annabeth cried harder. I hummed most of the second verse, because I forgot the words. Soon she fell asleep in my arms. I whispered the last lines of the song again.
