To have someone care.
Doesn't that sound great? To have someone that misses you when you're away. To know that you are loved no matter what you do or might have done. To know someone is there for you during your worst days and your bast days. That's all Whitney ever wanted in life, and she got it, but not the way she wished for.
She was never alone, but always felt lonely. Her parents never paid her any attention, unless she caused trouble. They always focused on her older brother, the 'perfect' child. He could do no wrong while she could never do any right.
Even though Ben was idolize by their parents, he never liked all the attention. Whenever he could escape from their constant praise, he would be with Whitney. She never understood why he liked her so much, she sure wasn't complaining about it either.
They had a simple relationship. They'd never talk unless Whitney would ask him questions about her homework. They liked just having one anothers company and that was all. At school or in public, Ben would act like any other teenage boy would and Whitney would be her always quiet self. If she would get bullied, Ben would be there to protect her. Whitney knew Ben wasn't going to be there for her forever, she just never imagined he would leave her so soon.
Ben was bringing Whitney home from school when it happened. She had to stayed late to finish up a math test and help clean up the science lab after the frog dissection the 7th graders did. She was on her way out the door when she ran into Ben.
"You ready to go?" Ben asked her smiling as he takes her bag. She nods giving him a small smile as they go to his truck.
The ride was quiet other than the radio playing, that's how it always was. Whitney was reading her book as they got on the bridge right outside their house when Ben started asking her questions about her day and if she had been bullied or not. Whitney would reply with simple one word answers, laughing when Ben mimicked her with a voice that was to high to be her's. Ben smiles at her, taking his eyes off the road for one moment when the logging truck hit them.
It happened fast, one minute they were on the bridge, the next they were sinking fast into the water. Whitney had blacked out at the time but could remember her brother calling her name. She could remember the feel of his arms rapped around her as he pulled her out the cab of the sinking truck. She could remember all of what happened, even though it was painful to.
She was in the hospital when she woke up. Her parents were there and they hugged her tightly when they noticed she was awake. She had been out for three days, in that time they had made arrangements for a funeral that took place before she had awaken. Only they weren't for her.
"Ben died of blood loss and a punctured lung," the doctor told her seeing as her parents were to weak to tell her, "When the ambulance got there you two were barely breathing. He died on the way here. I'm sorry for your loss." Whitney couldn't speak, all she could do was cry.
After Whitney was released from the hospital, her parents took her to see Ben's grave. Her mother stood on her right and her father was on her left. Whitney had never felt love from her parents before and was thankful for them supporting her now. If it wasn't for Ben, she wouldn't be able to have their love now when she needed it the most.
To think that the loss of Ben was the only way for Whitney to know her parents loved her was horrible. It took her a months to get used to all the attention she was receiving from them, that was only natural though. There would always be a limit to how much they could take her mind off of her brother, but it would always be there along with the last words she heard Ben say.
"I love you, Whitney. I always will..."
