I ran down the hallway towards my old bedroom, which was now occupied by my stepsisters. It was the second largest room in the house. I missed that place. Upon going in, I discovered Calypso reading a letter to Reyna, pausing only to breath and shriek excitedly.

"... where Prince Perseus will begin his search for a wife!" Squealed Calypso. Reyna swooned then giggled.

"Imagine, Callie, getting to wake up to him everyday!" She exclaimed.

Calypso nodded thoughtfully. "And getting constantly showered by his eternal affection!"

"And getting to-"

They stopped when they saw me. Reyna made a face and stuck out her tongue. "Well, well, well. If it isn't little Annie Bell. Done with dinner already?" She asked snottily, smoothing the crinkles in her dress.

I pursed my lips. "I was just getting started when I heard you scream. What's wrong?"

Calypso's eyes bulged. "Wrong? WRONG? Prince Perseus is hosting a ball and there's nothing wrong about that!" She declared.

"Oh," I stammered, my face turning red. "A ball?"

"Yes, Annie. He's hosting a ball where he will start looking for a girl to marry. Don't you know how big a deal this is?" Reyna said. "It's open to every girl in the kingdom!"

"So I can go too?" I asked hopefully. Instead of replying, she snorted and Calypso smirked.

"Like he would ever notice you!" Calypso said. "He'll be too busy with me to care about anyone else!"

Reyna glared at her. "You're practically a child yourself. It's me he wants."

They continued bickering while I went back to work on dinner. I couldn't keep the ball out of my mind. A chance to meet Prince Perseus? I definitely didn't want to miss out on that!

I brought it up at dinner and instantly I knew I made a mistake. Hera chuckled and gestured to my messy self. "Darling, what an outrageous thought. Either one of my daughters would be a better suit for him than some attic living, house cleaning peasant like you! You can hardly even dress yourself!"

My stepsisters joined in. "She's as dumb as an ox!" Cried Calypso.

"And as ugly as a mule!" Reyna added.

They all laughed while I stood there, furious. I wanted to smack them all, but since Hera had adopted me after my father's death, she was my mother. I could get into serious trouble with the law by doing that. So I swallowed my pride and went to clean the dishes.

While I choked back sobs as I did the dishes, my brown cat Grover rubbed his body against my legs, demanding attention. He was a stray but I loved him. I picked him up and went outside for some fresh air.

"Grover, why are they so awful? And why can't I go to the ball? He invited every girl in the kingdom to attend!" As I said that, Calypso's words echoed in my head. Like he would ever notice you!

Grover purred and I stroked his soft fur. He sure had a way of calming me down fast. I petted him a few more times, then retreated to my attic. I fell asleep quickly, imagining what it would be like to live with Perseus.
