Chapter 7: The Past is Behind Us

Alex's POV
As we sat down for lunch, Laurens had an idea. Even though we were all best friends, no one knew anything about each other's pasts. We began talking about our families, but John realised I was quiet.
"Alex, is everything ok?"
I hang my head.
"You guys have amazing families." I said.
"What about your mum and dad?" Lafayette asked.
I looked up.
"I'm actually an orphan..."
John hugged me with sympathy as I smiled.
"My adoptive father is George Washington."
"Though past, bud?"
"Yeah. So I was born in the Caribbean, and a hurricane destroyed my home. When I was fourteen,I worked at a trading charter. My dad left and my mum died. I moved in with my cousin, who commited suicide later that year. I started writing, and they collected money to send me to America. I was adopted by George Washington, and here I am."
"Life's been a bitch to you, huh?"
"Yeah!" I exclaimed, giving a small laugh. I was still so happy with my new found relationship, that I couldn't think about that.
With summer break approaching, this is going to be the best one yet!
